Imagine a tube or pipe animating i.e. deforming along a curve. Actually, a curve down the y axis then turning 90 degrees onto the positve z axis. No problem, I can get this to hapen with the bone/morph technique and also using trailer. the rub is this tube or pipe also has to rotate constantly, in this example it would be the heading angle, like a drill. Using trailer works until the curve, then the pipe continues to deform, but the rotation turns the animation into something like a growing propleller blade. Using the bone/morph technique basically does the same thing, because as the object rotates, so do the bones. Any suggestions? I feel like I am missing something very obvious, but spending tooooo much time trying to figure it out.

Nifty's curve ik plugin has some twist ability. Give it a try.

Use trailer. Put bones into the tube, rest them etc.
Apply trailer to the pipe and it will animate and deform along its path.
Trailer respects other deformations too. If you now rotate the bones the mesh will too AND still work with trailer.

Awesome! Thanks, I knew it was something like that.... so obvious.
