hello all, i'm building a new system, my dealer told me to install one extreme cpu instead of quad core, and he said that it's very faster and better than quad, is that true, anyone have experienced extreme.

the extreme is 3.73 ghz with 4 mb cache
the quad core is 2.4 ghz @ 4 mb cache

my question is if extrem is quad core based or not, is it better than quad by itself, is this extreme model with 4 mb cache is good?

anyway he want to build it on:

asus board
4 gb ddr2 667mhz ram
nvidia 9600 512 mb as vga
extreme cpu 3.73 ghz 4 mb cache

do u recommend it?

thanks for any contrivution and help

3.73 x 2 = 7.46

2.4 x 4 = 9.6

Go with the quad core.

Are you sure that is 3.73 ghz for the extreme? The fastest one I see at newegg is 3.2 ghz and the cache on the extreme is 12mb cache from what I see...

For the price difference, you could get a quad core, plus buy a second quad core as a render node.

I think your dealer is giving you bad advice. He may not realize that LightWave is one of the few applications that can take full advantage of 4 cores.

The extreme will be faster for things that aren't multithreaded, but for rendering go with the quad.

my dealer have the old extreme cpu with 4 mb cache, he have also 8 and 12 but they are very costy as for 1000$, but the 4 mb cache with 3.73 is for 500$
when i searched for the extreme, i got that extreme is 4 cores, but as i get from you pplz now, you are saying that extreme is duo core not quad core, can you confirm these infos, extreme is duo or quad?

The Intel Extreme comes in both dual core and quad core. The fastest I've found is 3.2 ghz.

Every processor has a model number, find out the exact model numbers he is offering for both quad and extreme.

The only 4mb cache extreme I see is the X6800 which runs at 2.93 GHZ, not 3.73

Something you should watch for is to make sure he is not selling you a CPU that has been overclocked.

I couldnt check the CPU box or model number he is offering today, it's off day, but as what i'm seein g, the only extreme with 4mb cache and 3.73 ghz available is the P4 extreme HT wich is not any core tech. not duo nor quad, and if this is the true I think obviously I have to go with quad core 2.4 wich should surpass the extreme by far, can anyone confirm my findings?
and specially quad corre will benefit the ddr3 tech, or m I wrong here.
