First of all, I hope I posted this in the right tread.

Hello, I'm new to Lightwave (I'm new in the whole 3D world) and after reading the Inside Lightwave 9 book I decided to make a 3D
object myself. I choose a steam locomotive. Probably not the easiest start for a beginner like me but I think I can pull it off and learn a lot
on the way.

Now I've got a small problem I solved but I'm wondering if there is an easer way to solve it. First I created a long tube for the kettle with the disk tool http://www.digitalman.nl/Forum/Steamtrain/steamtrain_1.jpg

On top of the kettle there are domes and I created another tube with the disk tool in the second layer. After positioning the second tube I changed layers and use the Solid Drill to create a structure so I can bevel them out. After using the solid drill I get a lot of points all over the edge. These points are sometime so close to each other that beveling is not possible without messing up the structure.

I solved it by moving points so I can bevel. After I beveled it, I moved points to bevel more. After al I did get the result I wanted but it was a lot of work

If you want to model all as one complete object you're probably better off diving into sub-patch modelling. The following link is diving into it on part four but shows a possible solution to what you're trying to achieve about half way down in the section called 'dircle in a square' and part five takes that a stage further and shows how to model a circle on a curved surface which is even closer to what you are looking to do.

Tanks cagy. Looks like a pretty interesting tutorial. I'm going to read it front to back before I continue my locomotive. Maybe I'm going to start all over after reading this.

Just starting this project and already learning......
