I swore I had a plugin way-back-when that would automatically take a group of "parts" (connected pieces of geometry) in a given layer and move each "part" into it's own separate layer.

I know Pictrix's Backdrop tool does this manually but I have a bunch of these to do, with more planned down the road and would like to find an automated way of doing it.

I searched Flay and found one Japanese plugin called "Connect Poly to Layer", but all I get is an error message when I try to download it. Anyway it wasn't the one I use to have, but still looked like it'd get the job done.

If anyone did grab it before it went away OR if anyone knows of another plugin that does the same thing I'd be mighty obliged if you could find it in your heart and post it (or a working link) here.

I attached an image to better illustrate what I'm looking for. I also attached an interface pic of the Connect_Poly_to_Layer plugin which seems to have gone bye-bye.:bangwall:

Rings a bell does that, or was it a case of two plugins? Split by surface and surface to parts or summat.
Might be worth a FLAY search on parts / surfaces.

zardoz-
Thank you! Thank You! That script you suggested works great! It's exactly what I needed.

It also jogged my memory. It was 3D Arsenal that includes a tool that cuts up letterforms and places each letter in a separate layer. I' usually go to the yearly Newtek Tricaster Tour and they always show off 3D Arsenal. That's where I've seen this in action before.
