View Full Version : So, My IK Boost experience

Yes, I know there is another thread. But, this is important.

I saw the demo from Newtek, when it first came out. Thought "that looks kind of neat"

I tried to use it, without any real understanding, couldn't get much result.

Read continuous bashing of IKB on the forums, figured I'll just ignore IKB, because those "more" knowledgable have panned it.

Saw the demo by Larry today. I am blown away. IKB is powerful, useful, elegant and a tool that is way undervalued and from what I've read previously: misrepresented. I left the demo, fired up LW and tried a quick trick I saw in the demo and it did what i wanted.

There is a very important lesson for me here. I have a hard time right now with the scattershot documentation of features, being able to learn the way I'm used to. I'm not the genius I've noted in others in understanding it by playing with it. My lesson: there are some truly stunning tools in Lightwave that I will miss if I let others think for me.

If you go and check out the recorded sessions from Larry's demo, maybe you will agree. If you are one of the ones who dislike IKB, fine, I'm not here to change your mind. BUT... IKB is a very powerful tool (at least for me)

Think I'm gonna buy Larry's dvd.

Well, now that I'm done with the DVD, I should probably sell it for another person to enjoy it. :)

It's very useful. Larry explains everything pretty well, and if you know even a smidgen of rigging, all you have to do after that is apply IKB and start animating.

hehe... my experience with IKB:

1) watch the free Kurv tutorial/demo and several videos linked to on IKBoost.com
2) load up a scene I had with lion on a base and apply IKB
3) drag out handles, etc
4) mess around with it for an hour or so, experiencing lots of slow-down and horrible results.
5) give up in frustration

I'll probably try it again pretty soon, but this time I'll set up a new bone structure in layout that will probably function better than the old one (that didn't function terribly well in the first place).

What does this mean? Is CA in LW actually good now, even though the tool is 3-4 years old? I just have to LOL.

Well, no matter what you do you have to give it some time. There is technology and there is art. It will take some getting used to and understanding the technology fully and they could take a few weeks right there depending on your time. Then there would be understanding the art of how to do it and make it work and I am sure Larry goes into that more in depth in the video. I can not comment specifically because I have not used IKB that much. But I would say, give it time.

Yes, sometimes it takes quite a bit of time to work new features into your workflow...

When IK Booster first came out I was already part way through my BlastOff! short (http://dreamlight.com/insights/12/welcome.html), so I stuck with the old-style LW IK for that... (and had to deal with a bad case of the IK jitters, luckily I was able to apply jolt to the space ship to mask the character's IK jitters) I didn't get around to have an opportunity to give IK Booster a good spin until I started my current project, The Autiton Archives (http://dreamlight.com/insights/autitons/welcome.html)... and Larry graciously gave me a quick demo of it when I first started rigging my 0090 character...

At first I didn't like the idea of having to key everything, having come from using full-time IK... but once I really used IK Booster, I saw that it was a breeze to manage all those keys and even rework them using the tools right in IK Booster... I'd really have a hard time going back to the old-style now...

I'm using IK Booster for this current project and would love to see it continued to be developed, or at least kept running smoothly as LW moves forward, since no matter how good any new tools will be, it'll take a while to transition to be able to use them anyway... well after they are fully developed and released...
