Hi guys,
I'm trying to send .obj files of models I made in LW to someone who is going to load them into Maya.

He keeps telling me he's having problems because theres information missing.

Any suggestions?

The current (LW9.3) .obj exporter has propblems. I don't think that image map data makes it out properly. You may want to use Blender as a middle man. Open an .lwo in Blender, then export the .obj from there instead of Lightwave.

I'm not sure if there are substantial differences in the .obj exporter between 9.0 and 9.3. I still recommend downloading Blender and using it is a file converter.

Another option is to join 9.5 open beta and see if any developlment has taken place with the exporter there.

Bueller?................Bueller?????

Lmao! Nice movie reference.

Have you tried archiving it / them with something like WinRar and sending that?
Do you have UVs / more than one set of UVs, or more than one texture map associated with the file?

Or....
Is there any sign of what might be missing, like a default material or something?

Image data seems to get lost. Make a cube, assign it a surface "cube", UV it, stick an image on it, and export as an .obj. Close your object. Now, in Modeler, load the .obj you just exported. You will find your cube loads and it has a surface named "cube" applied to it, however the texture channel is empty. The UV data is there, but the connection to the image seems to be missing.

All material properties are stored in a separate file that uses the MTL extension.

LightWave does not write the MTL file.

Seach for a free plugin from Dodgy to write a MTL file.
