I would like to be able to identify a specific object in a scene and give it a text comment.

For example "car[2]" to have a comment of "Car for player 2"

Ideally, i would like to also be able to specify a comment at a key frame.

For example at Key 1000: "Activate Car for player 2"

(The text comment will be used in my own opengl renderer application)

I was thinking of creating a plugin to do this, but i am sure there must be another simpler way...

You can apply comments to objects using Additional>Item comment. To display them in layout window, apply Object Properties>Geometry>Item Comment Display. To comment lights or cameras, use Item Comment, then apply the comment display to a parented null.

You can also have a comment displayed per keyframe using the Dope Track. Open it, right click for the menu and add a marker. When the timeline cursor is on a marked frame, you can set the marker text that will be displayed in the status line.

Don't know if this is of any use, since you need it for an external program, but hope it helps.

Thanks, that was exactly what i was looking for :)

The objects comments are stored in the scene as:

LoadObjectLayer 1 10000077 LightGFX/motor_boat.lwo
ChangeObject 0
// This is a comment
ShowObject 7 3

And the dope track in the following format:

DopetrackState M:109.633333;M:111.700000
DopetrackText1 This is my first comment
DopetrackText2 This is my second comment

Which i can easily read in.

Thank you very much.
