If youve only worked with LW for a few weeks its going to be a very challenging project.
It can be done using geometry and displacements with texture maps to get the fiery texture or with Geometry/particles and hypervoxels.

This how to make a mushroom cloud or nuke thing is getting asked for every other day it seems, theres a lot of threads in newtek forums covering this, so
just do a search on nuke, mushroom or bomb and you should be finding lots of stuff.

Probably you should start with something else. I do 3d for more than 12 years and my mushroom cloud cost me all the nerves there are.

If this would be a sailing forum and you told us you just started sailing, but your first journey is once around the world and now you need some advice, what kind of answers would you expect?

Don't think of studying physics if you just started grammar school. That's the best advise I can give you.

Cheers and welcome to the community

Hey gthumbus, take a look at this:
from 1:13 to 1:18 you can see how they animated the mushroom with the rotation af an array of quadrangles. Ok they have used the Dinamyte plugin (that gives the mushroom the burning look), but you can achieve a similar effect associating LW hypervoxels and/or particle emitters to a bunch of quadrangles animated in the same fashion.
