Is there any way to animate smoothing?

What is the effect you are trying to achieve?

A piece of fabric is stretched on a frame and looks good smoothed. As the frame collapses, the panels of fabric look more realistic unsmoothed.

I'm sure dpont has a node for this :)

Object replacement could also help, depending on how slowly it happens (in layout)..

Thanks.

OK so frames kind of like an umbrella, or a retractable awning or a convertible care top?

When you say, "realistic, unsmoothed", what kind of material? Would it be crumpled like wrinkled fabric? Or would it be lots of folds like an unmade bed?

You can animate a bump or displacement such as the crumple texture or something similar for wrinkled fabric. Dynamics might work for the folds.

Do you have a way to fix the fabric to the frame yet? Or do you need help with that?

Is there any way to animate smoothing?

Just to clarify: do you want to animate between flat and smooth shading? That is, like toggling the Smoothing checkbox in surface editor?

If so, see the attached node. It takes the flat and smooth surface normals and mixes them. An envelope on mixer's opacity value allows to animate the effect.

Hope this is what you were looking for, otherwise the geometric solutions in the other replies are the way to go.

Do you mean animate between wrinkled and non wrinkled?
Morphing or clothfx would be my first choices.
