Hmmm :

Does the rigs work with network rendering?
No, you will need to bake the body and wheels position and rotation.

is a bit of a problem.

Ugh. The forum software sucks. There was also a question here : what does the throttle going backwards question mean?

If you have a look at the simple throttle and throttle and slide videos. If you set the throttle to a minus value, the car slows down. It wont start moving backwards.

There is a typo in my first post.
Up to eight extra wheels for cars and trailers.

That tank moving over landscape looks very nice....

Cageman
05-15-2008, 12:27 AM
It's really easy to use. I got a car up and running within 5 minutes. A tank will require some more preparation in modeler though, but we are still talking about minutes rather than hours to get a tank up and running.

Another thing is that Walfridson do care about LW and I don't see him quit using it anytime soon. It's a safe investment.

Good work, Walfridson!

tonybliss

... and from extensive basic experiments, it is VERY stable on both MAC and PC platforms. The display feedback is also very fluid.
If you want to animate realistic car/quad plus vehicle movements this IS your best bet.

Wow, this must be one of the best car rigging tools i've seen in a long long while.
Especially with the dynamics working.

Now all we need is realtime feedback and linking the throttle and steering to a (game)controller.

Interesting. Will this plugin work for trains as well?

Having used it, I am not sure if what you ask is really what this plugin aims at. It allows keyframing and intuitively allows the handing and response of a vehicle to react to terrain, acceleration, braking, sliding, etc. Did you watch the videos?

Animating a train involves following a rail perfectly with many wheels, following perfect curves, without sliding - this would be something else, though certain modifiers -could- help with controlling the system (acceleration, braking etc).

ps. Walfridson - Congrats on the release!

The ordering process is a little funky - I thought something broke because step 2 was the receipt and I hadn't paid for anything yet. After realising that I wasn't going to get something for nothing, I had a look at the instructions for ordering and realised what was needed :D

I'm now sitting twiddling my fingers waiting for my copy to turn up.

What are you looking for that Maestro doesn't offer in this respect?

Vehicle Rigger certainly is a wonder - I had a library of Relativity expressions for this kind of thing, and now I can drop those and shave hours off my time. Excellent stuff, and Johan's support is fast and friendly.

The website wants to tack on another 25%, making it 106 Euro instead of 85... Usually when I've bought from overseas VAT was not collected for US customers. Is this not the case here?

Private users who purchase items from the EU will have to pay the salestax of the country. The salestax in Sweden is 25%.

This applies to citizens of the EU or if you reside outside the EU.

If you have a company and present your VAT number then the price is 85 as you then do not have to pay the VAT.

Red_Oddity
05-19-2008, 03:13 AM
And if you own a company or are using the plugin for your work but don't have a VAT number, you can get the paid VAT back when you pay you taxes (or atleast you can use it to lower taxes you still need to pay)

Erm, it doesn't if the customer resides outside of the EU.
http://ec.europa.eu/taxation_customs/taxation/vat/how_vat_works/index_en.htm

For the purpose of exports between the Community and non-member countries, no VAT is charged on the transaction and the VAT already paid on the inputs of the good for export is deducted

Maybe that walfridson has it or something similar already in mind, he developed something in that way, SimLW, but outside of LW. I think that now would possible to modify/redesign SimLW for Vehicle Rigger, as there is no exporting problem and most no gimbal lock problem to be solved:
http://www.newtek.com/forums/showthread.php?t=69662

On the other hand there is something that work in LW with keyboard control, the Sensei' CameraMan, WSAD style. I think that a such controller would not be smooth in realtime, so not really useful:

Im planning on getting this..is there a tutorial on making that scene where the car goes throught the (smoke/dust/body) cloud with the collision and all?

Also, looking at the questions that people are asking and am wondering...
will there be reverse, and rig flipping at any point? I think reverse is more important than flipping (unless you're making The A-Team or Speed Racer-2).

I can probably post my example of an Abrams-tank later...let's say in a few days or something (I did some screwups with the antennas that I would like to fix). ;)

07-22-2008, 08:50 AM
I've got a Abrams myself, I'd like to use for an animation (and further I'll rig a Tiger like the Norwegian military use..) - but there's a huge problem, it's really REALLY hard to make 'perfect' morphs... Any ideas on this, Cageman ?

lwanmtr
07-22-2008, 02:08 PM
There is probably a simpler way, but here is how I made a tread morph long ago...
I made one section (copied it to another layer), then made a closed path that followed the wheels..then I path cloned (changing numbers until it finally looked right. Then I copied the path and split it at the center of the second tread so the start of the path was at that point. then I path cloned the copied tread using the same values as before.
It worked good and there is only slight squeezing at the drive wheels.

My problem it figuring out how to model the tread and the path in order tohave the treads line up at each joint. Is there a way to measure the total length of a path (thats all curvy and such)?

OlaHaldor
07-23-2008, 09:03 AM
Johan helped me out on this. The path centered and the one tread object centered as well helped me with my problem. The only problem now is that I can't add smoke, and parenting it to the body (or any other object) without the Body of the tank jumping around like crazy, like if it's bouncing on the particles. :screwy:

But so far, I've tested with a Landrover and the Abrams tank. Think it's quite fun just moving them around, adjusting the thrust and make target_ nulls to make it turn and follow my route automatically. This is like goofing around with a RC car, rather than working. :D All I'd like now is a way to use a XBOX360 controller or so, to control the thrust and steering - and I'm probably not alone on that one.

PS! Very quick test animations: Landrover (http://www.olahaldor.net/vehiclerigger/roveranimation.mov) - M1 Abrams tank (http://www.olahaldor.net/vehiclerigger/m1abrams.mov)

walfridson

You can always solve it by baking with VRbaker.
I tried adding a null, parenting it to a wheelnull by using motion modifier expression and it worked with particle emitter.

Nice animation!

Just a notice for the users.

You can download and try the beta version of w_gamedevice in the forum. It's windows x86 only.

It's a motion modifier so you can use it on non VR project as well. Recording control is in the master plugins.

I bought this plugin a few years ago and it behaved well for the project I used it on. I did run into a few solvable issues, but my memory is a bit fuzzy.

One problem (after baking the animation, i think) was when moving around the curvy track, the main rotation would flip 360 degrees at certain points. This would be easy to miss while working with the scene but is very noticeable with motion blur on. This was fixed by going into the graph editor and looking for the spots in the envelope, selecting the points that were on the bottom and moving them to the top of the curve. There is at least one plugin available that fixes this problem so you don't have to do the steps manually.

Another issue i had was the wheels not lining up with the road surface, sometimes they would be above it and sometimes below it. Again, i think this was after baking. I believe the problem was that the motion modifier (part of the plugin that gets added to the items automatically) for the wheels or suspension was referencing the main null's height instead of the wheel null's height or something like that. All i remember is that it was looking to a central item instead of the outer item. It was easily fixed by correcting the setting in the wheel (or suspension?) motion modifier.

The 3rd issue i remember was that when spinning the tires rapidly (probably an insanely fast speed) with the car sitting still, i was getting some weird shadows. I was using photoreal motion blur and the high rotation speed was spreading the tires out flinging the pixels off the wheels like they were mud. It was really bizarre. I believe i fixed it by enveloping the number of motion blur passes so they were much higher in that part of the animation or something like that. I may have even just used the classic motion blur for that camera.

Again, the plugin was very helpful. Thanks for sharing it, Johan. :)
