Ok heres what im tasked with. Ive got some pipes already modelled from cad data and i need to high-light em like something is flowing along them....(hydraulic pressure)

Ive used an earlier version of Denis Pontonnier's shifter in the past, which kinda animates a shape along a path....only problem is modelling this path is proving to b a real ball ache.

Ive already looked at using hypervoxels, serpant and inertia but i think i might be over complicating things here. Is there a more straight forward way of animating this? As i already have the internal pipe modelled does anyone have any suggestions to a simple solution?

I'd use a weightmap gradient (start of pipe to end) with a nodal surface setup (to get the gradient animated I think you need nodes, old surface editor won't let you do envelopes on the gradients)

To get the weightmap gradient use this:

I never tried exactly this, but if you manage to get the nodal gradient animated it will work (I strongly believe).

[edit: This solution btw is meant for stuff like making the inner tube visible from start to end, or adding color or surfacing in general. it won't help you for manipulating geometry]

There is a video tutorial showing how to do it using effectors i believe

Perhaps fertilizer...free plugin.
the quicktime tutorial is found here
http://www.md-arts.com/tutorials/lw_tutorials/slides/FertilizerTut_01.html

and the plugin itself here.

Hey thanks for the suggestions guys, i resorted to using Denis Pontonnier's shifter again. Doesnt seem to work with 9.3 but it ok with 9.2.

Its easy to use but relies on railed extruded objects....hence having to pain-stakingly remodel the inner pipes....boo for me!

Anyways, heres where you can get it if it helps anyone out.....

looks nice, but it seems to me that you could have used fertilizer, works with 9.3 and you wouldn´t have to remodel the inner parts.

He..to late for the party again..

Im just a little bit surprised that so many people are trying to figure out
this thing, how to make animated extrusion or flows and that the fertilizer plugin seems to be so unheard of by many, it really should be a first choice perhaps and also included in Lightwave.
That is until Layout gets a new nifty simple animate extrude tool.

fertilizer plugin link is dead.... Does anyone have a copy of this free download or maybe another link?
