well with the lack of fbx import on latest versions of lightwave i've gone back to using lightwave 7.5:D

i must say a love the interface!:thumbsup:
feels like 'home'

well fbx export is 'there' but import is lacking...
also trying out point oven currently....it may make my life simpler moving between apps.

given up with point oven...doesn't seem to write a lws file that actually has the data in the scene...juts a basic clean scene lws with none of the objects in xsi in it at all...

so my method of getting a xsi animated space scene into lightwave are as follows!

xsi> export to 3dsmax via crosswalk
import via crosswalk into 3dsmax9
load that max 9 file into max2008
export in 2 parts [to reduce poly count of the scene] as fbx @ 5.5
import into lightwave 7.5d via the fbx plugin
rotate the imported models as they are out by around 90deg in 2 axis.
import the second half from max as a separate fbx
save the lightwave scene....

fun huh?
...hey it works so i'm REALLY HAPPY!

so just to list it correctly:-

xsi to lightwave [large animated scene [500,000 polys]

1.xsi>export to 3dsmax via crosswalk
2.import into 3dsmax 9 via crosswalk
3.export saved max 9 file from 3dsmax 2008 as a 5.5 fbx
4.re-install lightwave 7.5d onto my system
5.install the fbx plugin
6.import the fbx max2008 created into lightwave7.5
7.rotate the scene root in 2 axis to relocate the scene correctly.
8.save as lightwave scene .kws
9.load up in lightwave 9.0

Yes, little old me!

'tis funny, I was digging around for some stuff last night, and I found an old LW 'Getting Started' video with Don Ballance on it!

Funny looking at how LW used to be! (And actually some parts not so funny as they looked exactly the same!)

Cress, perhaps you should start a thread in the OB section on this? FBX was aprt of the to do list, and it would be great to get at least some of the functionality issues you describe solved before release ..

Edit: ok found your OB thread :P

I think the XSI to LW title could be renamed to 'What's inadequate with fbx import today', since it is not only an xsi issue ..

Strange issue you've got with PointOven... I can send objects to/from Maya with MDDs assigned (works both ways).

Also, I'm successfully importing/exporting FBX-files from Maya with LW9.3.1

Wierd stuff you've got going there!

And I am using the FBX from Autodesk with LW 8.x and LW9.3.1 fine, just not using any bones so do not know if there are issues there.

thing is i'm going from xsi essentials which i know virtually nothing about to export an artists xsi models/scenes into lightwave...the director himself only has lightwave 7.5 and is across the pond in newyork... the director wants to get the scenes into lightwave as all the other artists have lightwave... also he can play with the scenes as the xsi artist is having issues getting decent renders out so they want it moved to lightwave.

the xsi artist is good at modeling..good at rigging but by his own admission really not good enough for lighting/rendering/surfacing...he also didn't know how to get the scenes moved from xsi to anything else...so i stepped in!

the issue i have with xsi export to lightwave via point oven is:-
1.i have no idea how to do it!
2.i HAVE gotten xsi to spit out the 300+ lwo models from the scene
3.the lightwave scene it created was a clean blank scene...

not sure what to do but a chap on the O/B board has a list of what to do so i'll try that later on.

re FBX in lighwave 9.* '' in export there's fbx listed
in import there's bvh mo cap....

I do wish by this time some newtek had the brain to HARD CODED IMPORT properly placed the import options and not strewn around the app in hide away holes under master plugins or wot not....

once place to look , one place to find them all! [lotr]

me?....naah not so simple with xsi>lightwave7.5

note xsi doesn't i believe have options to choose which fbx type to output to

3dsmax however does have an option to export to fbx 5.5, which 7.5 will work with
