A deceptively simple job. I started with a scan. I made one quad to represent a small part of a curve, then kept using Extend on the leading edge. Drag and drag points and extend again.

Once it was done in 2D (and way faster than I would have been able to do it in Illustrator,) I extruded it out, then dragged sections forward and back for the weaving. My backdrop sucks, but it's mostly faded out in the final.

Oh, all LW except for a little bloom in PS.

Any idea how I can deal with the aliasing on the right and left edges of the outer oval? I used

use Limit Dynamic Range to better distribute adaptive sampling

Man, that looks cool. I like the way that you hand-made the polygons, because it gives it a realistic bent shape near the cross-weaves.

I'm going to have to give something like that a gander. Looks great.

Thank you! Yes, I decided to keep the warts intact.

Just google "Celtic" and go to the images for millions of cool reference images, from very simple to insanely complex. Yeah, now that I think about it, something like this (http://bridge-house.org.uk/ethos/celtic-christian-spiritual/Celtic%20Knot-cross.gif) might look good in my portfolio. Made out of tarnished copper, or pitted gold...

Okay, that'll cost me a few days!
