Attempting to make a displacement map or a bump map from a high-poly model. My process is:

Make low-poly model in LightWave.
Import .lwo into Blender and do my sculpting.

This is where my process stops. Does anyone have a workflow or tutorial for this that they’d like to share? Does anyone use Blender for this purpose?

Are you trying to create a normal map?

I have no experience with normal maps, but perhaps that makes more sense than a displacement map.

My goal is to generate a map that can be applied to lower-poly models that will produce nice detail at rendertime. Is a normal map the way to go?

Yes. That is the current technology. That is how you get sculpted objects from Zbrush into Lightwave. I assume Blender also has a way to export the normal maps from your sculpted model but I have not done it yet.
