View Full Version : How to quickly populate a city?

Is there a down and dirty way to "populate" a city with numbers of buildings?

I know that I could model buildings one by one, putting in the detail for each, but was hoping there was some technique for doing it that could make it quicker.

Sorry if this sounds like a dumb question...

If you would like to do a large city, you may want to consider HDInstance which will allow you to populate a city pretty easily. Check out the videos in the HDInstance gallery to make a city. This one is particularly impressive: http://www.happy-digital.com/instance_videoClips.php?videoClips=5

Here's a city I was working on last year. I was doing it the hard way. And I quickly reached the limit at what my computer could handle polygon wise... If I had to do it again, I'd use HD Instance in a heartbeat. Here's the link: http://www.newtek.com/forums/showthread.php?t=58589&highlight=bright+lights

You could try Eki's CityGen which is part of his modpak here: http://www.kolumbus.fi/erkki.halkka/modpak/index.html It will generate buildings with various parameters. I haven't used it so I can't say for sure what's it like.

nice buildings you have in those uploads...

those software tools look promising, but windows-only; I'm a mac user!

so, I guess I gotta git 'er done old-school...

From William's videos:

Creating EndoMorphs for a simple character model, in Modeler; using the model and Morph Mixer to create a crowd in Layout.

Opps... sorry... when I first read 'populate' I thought you meant with people.... lol

P.S.

Another approach that speeds up modeling is to start with good texture maps and then model to fit an image using backdrop in Modeler.

I have found these Marlin textures very useful for many projects. It is surprising how quickly you can get a convincing building out of simple geometry already fitted to textures of the real ledges and windows and such.

$159

I went around L.A. one day trying to shoot my own images but it is difficult to find a vantage point to shoot from that allows a straight on, flat image (long lens) with no shadows (overcast day), trees or cars in the way. So the Marlin City textures are a huge time saver.

There is also another collection I have never used-

I'm liking that approach...puts a serious city scene within reach for me.

thanks for that tip!

CityGen works pretty good for distant shots. The buildings it makes aren't very detailed, so it may not be so good for close ups. Years ago I found some really great city blocks modeled in LW by Moebius (you may know him as the set designer for The Fifth Element). There's 16 of them, but of course you can rotate one around and it looks like a whole new block. Here they are:
