Terra, a new feature CG film was done in Lightwave. According to the latest issue of HDRI (http://www.hdri3d.com/issues/h19.htm) it they did all the character animation in Maya and then did everything else in LW, including the rendering. Looks pretty cool... :)

On IMDB (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0858486/)

The film is also previewing this month at the Tribeca Film Festival (http://www.tribecafilmfestival.org/filmguide/Terra.html) (if you happen to be in the NYC area). It's playing on four different days.

some of the dates doesn't make sense. The Newtek Article has a date of Dec. 2003, but it is being shown at the Tribecca Film Festival?

It isn't a feature and it isn't new? It is a short. Looks good though.

edit::::
Didn't even see the date. Animation World article has it as "Fresh from the Festivals 2003"

Hmm...I thought Terra was a full-length, feature film, 89 minutes long...and was completed in 2007?

yeah, it's a feature film...it however WAS a short...that short got them the investment interest to make the FULL movie...which is due out soon.

I see. The Animation World article they linked to was about the original short.

The newtek and the animation links were probably older ones. To be honest I didn't even check the dates. If I could edit my first post I'd remove those links. But the IMDB link is current and so is the Tribeca link.

A 7 minute short became a 85 minute feature ...

"Animated in Maya", OUCH! Talk about a slap in Lightwave's face from one of the Lightwaves best animators.

Even if Aristomenis Tsirbas probably could do it, he needs to find ALOT of people that have enough skill (both technical and artistic) to pull it off, which is hard.... even in Maya-land (and that is alot easier than LW-land). Shading/Rendering is pretty much the same in all apps, including LW, so it wouldn't be that difficult to teach a bunch of Maya/XSI dudes how to use LWs renderer (it is, after all, one of the easiest renderers to use).

While this may be an indicator to LWs shortcommings in regards of animation/rigging, it is even more an indicator of Autodesks dominance.

... and in scripting and dynamics.

Ive heard various reasons as to why yet another longtime LW house turned to Maya for the heavy hitting. It is ever frustrating how LW has remained behind in key areas of CG feature production.

Oh, no, much harder to find LW character animators then Maya ones, and riggers too.
