I know this has probably been asked before, but the workaround has escaped me.

I don't know if PS treats all 32-bit images this way, but saving out of LW as 32-bit for PNG and TIF, PS automagically "applies" the alpha channel to what would normally be the "solid" background layer thus making the layer transparent and then "deletes" the alpha channel.

The question is, how do I disable this behavior so that the background remains 'solid' and the alpha is actually visible in the Channels palette?

What I did was search around for a older demo version of PS and swap out the loader files for PNG and TIF. The older PNG ones actually had more compression options and didn't do that alpha channel weirdness

I believe that TIFF 32 bit images keep the background until import (I would open them in a different viewer ans save a copy back-in-the-day), when it is removed. PNG 32 however seems to delete it on save ... can anyone confirm this?
