I'm interested in lightwave3d to do games. I'm new in this tecnology and I'm learning new tools and looking for a program like lightwave.

I know that I can do a "plug-in" to link lightwave with a language like C++ or Java. I've found a link that talks about that:

But I didn't understand very well how can I use this plug-in to movement a character in a Virtual World.

So my doubts are:
- how can I make games using the lightwave tool?
- what must I do to understand how to create a link between a programming language and lightwave3d?

Please help me to understand what can lightwave do for me....

Short answer is, 'It can do what you want'

Everything you'd need to access in LW to create a game/game content exporter can be accessed from the SDK or even LScript. If you're an experienced C++ programmer you should have no problem creating an exporter. Even if you're not, there's now enough power in LScript to create a fully working game exporter which is exactly my situation. I tinker around with a game engine, I've no real knowledge of C/C++, but managed to code an animation exporter using just LScript.

C++ SDK:

Ok I understood.
But what I want to know is if the plug-in that I do in C++ is the way to movement a character in a game for example? (It's what I think that is possible).

I've found some tutorials to make a plug-in, and I've built one in Microsoft Visual C++, It worked without any problem (in the programming) The code was compiled without any problem. But when I entered in the Modeler of Lightwave It didn't happens anything.

My doubt is, if what I'm doing in C++ is to make a box to move for example...

Sorry but I'm not quite sure what you mean.

Do you wish to animate something in Layout, then export that animation to custom '3d game engine' format?

That is possible.

If you could explain a little more ? :)

You might also like the fact that there is improved support for game developers in the upcoming Lightwave 8.

I am not sure I understand your question either, but there are plenty of game developers who do use LW for games...

You might want to try a more general forum with a title including "Game Development Support" or something similar and I am sure plenty of people can tell you what can and can't be done... LW is not a game engine, but you can use it to create the environments/characters/animations/movies for a game...

Do you have an example of what you would like to achieve with a plug-in? The ones I have seen are importers/exporters of for instance Unreal object formats, etc.

I know that Lightwave is not a egine of a game. I want to know if the plug-in is part of a egine of a game.
If using a plug-in I can movement and animate characters in a game.

Ahh no. Lightwave plugins are for use in Lightwave ONLY.

The 'plugin' you make/use will only be for transferring data from Lightwave to your game engine format.

I would expect that moving and animating a character etc. is typically a function that the game engine provides...

Lightwave can make the pictures/objects used in that animation...

Ask not what Lightwave can do for you, but what you can do for Lightwave :)

go over to the lw-plugins yahoogroups list. they might be able to answer your questions better.
