You guys ever try googling the user name of the spammers? I gave it a shot with our most recent irritant, "peternovasup" and it comes up on about 10 other boards registered in the last few days.

Groundbreaking? no...
Interesting? It's Friday...
A solution? absolutely not...

Do you guys think that other boards have a measure in place to prevent the spam, or are certain boards targeted over others for other reasons?

I went through the exercise of starting the creation of a new user account yesterday to see what kind of safeguards are in place. NewTek definitely uses the "image of letters" trick, so I am guessing people are actually manually creating the accounts... Seems odd and a lot of work.

It's strange how some folks feel the need to spend their time annoying others, it's like at school holidays the amount of noise rises.
Go figure!

Yeah, my gut feeling is some of the 3X posts are coordinated and targeted. NT has an enemy or three. I don't see this as purely isolated and random.

Scary yet easy to do.

Why wouldn't competitors stoop to doing it?

Most of the spam that you see on this forum is from bots. Someone gets paid to go through the effort of writing software that can recognize the letters in those images that are generated so that spambots can do their business.

they need to add the reply email address to varify the account

Plus make it a little harder to join I think

Some web sites take awhile to register with and I don't mind at all...

Newtek should give all registered members the POWER to Delete those posts...

.... or at least the ability to temporarily hide it until a moderator checks it out.

Absolutely. And it's very easy to do. The "block reader" code for the Palm OS and Windows Mobile devices is the prevelant tool to use. It's very simple and can unscew and descern letters with no problems. You plug that into VBulletin's standard new-user responses and it's a no-brainer.

The other part is the SMTP reader that simply checks a POP mail account, gathers all the automated responses and scrapes the URL for the "account validation". It does take time to get it right, bit also takes no time to setup a local forum to test.

These *$$-hats on the other side of the links you see get paid pennies for everytime someone clicks it (visits, etc..). So it's jerk-wad money making in the worst kind of way.

When all else fails, manual validation of new applicants is possible (if it takes a day or so for that to happen, it's not the end of the world - e-mail to support and cs don't depend on membership). Very few spammers are going to make it through a manual process.

When you have a name like v1agracheep, buyCIALIS, painFr33-medz, I should say not. ;)

Not just that , but there are some eeeeevil sites (pron, online 'storage' free 'toolbars') etc that give you their 'service' or 'content' for free if you spend some time filling out the correct letters for various captchas, which is really feeding their database of spam software to help get thru the above mentioned.

They can also pay someone nothing in China or India or lots of places to just do this 16 hours a day.

Don't know if it is worth it, but they seem to be doing it.

However, I do not see any of these spams on other 3D graphic forums! Why is that???
