I am new to 3D and are thinking of producing packaging mock-ups in lightwave, is this the right program for me and having never used a 3d program how difficult is it.

I use LW for packshots a lot. It's quite simple process and since the new designs (of packaging) come very fast, my working process has become somewhat automated... I get the artworks in illustrator mostly, then photoshop batch for creating texture maps, applying textures, render with preset... quick and simple. I use 3 macs as a renderfarm with LW's screamnet and overall I'm happy.

You sure can use LightWave for product packaging mock-ups. Here's an example:

LightWave Rendition for Adobe Photoshop could also be used for this type of thing. (Sign-up for the Beta!)
