View Full Version : Making a city - specifically the roads: tips?

One thing in LW that I've always struggled with is making convincing streets. I know how to use rail extrude to make a single street, but what about junctions? Is there a method for joining two roads together at a junction to create nice rounded corners on the kerbs, etc?

I'm sure there's a way of doing it: after all, the Burnout team have been doing it for game after game, and Burnout Paradise looks wonderful. As I recall, they use LW for the Burnout games.

Any thoughts?

Maybe you can use lwcad curves for making the outlines of the streets and then
convert them in poligons.
Never tried it but should work for a basic shape.

The burnout streets are mostly flat which makes it easier to build the environments.

You'll need to get "jettofillet"(free plugin) from flay.com. It allows you to select points on 2d shapes and round them off.

Another tool that you'll need that is free is "PX_SP_Polygon". Check Flay or search this forum for it. Its a pen, curve, line tool with all the snapping options you could possibly need =)

With those 2 tools you'll be able to layout any kind of road.

Use PX_SP_Polygon in poly mode and build your intersection from the top view. Don't wory about rounding the corners yet. Just make the basic shape. Once you have your poly built. Use "jettofillet" to round off the corners.

Have fun!

Thanks for the input, folks. Jettofillet seems to have disappeared, and I'm not sure it even works in LW9. However, for anyone wondering, I found a replacement: http://www.trueart.pl/?URIType=Directory&URI=Products/Plug-Ins/TrueFillet

Seems pretty thorough.

PX_SP_Polygon is available here: http://www.pictrix.jp/lw/index_2.html

I'll give these a try, thanks again!

You have made me a happy man. I hope these plugins don't get broken in 9.5 ;)
