Get ready, it's coming.

Make some space on your hard drives. LightWave v9.5 is getting very close to Open Beta launch. In a matter of days, you will be testing the
new, jealousy-inducing features of the latest free update to LightWave.

We just wanted to give you a heads-up that we are putting the final
polishes on some phenomenal new features. We want your first
experience with LightWave v9.5 to be the best Open Beta experience yet.

Stay Tuned, and until then, keep an eye right here (http://www.newtek.com/forums/showthread.php?t=80543) on the NewTek forums for even more sneak peek imagery!

I was just curious to know how many more updates will there be to version 9's cycle?

In other words, will this beta ( once it goes gold ) be the last update before Lightwave goes to version 10 etc, which will require a purchase upgrade?

Bog
03-10-2008, 12:32 PM
Really, if 9.5 has anything like the promise shown in the previews, it's going to utterly revolutionise my workflow - accurate soft-shadow lights, with sane render times, that I can animate.

I'll be in mah bunk.

I'm patient. I can be patient. I can. I surely can. I'll just stay drunk between now and release! No, wait - if I do that, I'll lose my rag and post angrily at the people whinging about NewTek like petulant little children.

Ok, since you ask, here's "how to do it":

Click on the alpha thingy and set it to none. Probably not necessary, but what the hell.
Drop your object to the lowest subdivision level.
Click on the Displacement in the interface, by default on the right, and generate the displacement map.
Go to Alpha in the main mernu and find your new Alpha.
Click on the "FLip V" button. Very important, as ZBrush inverts the UV's and maps vertically.
Export as .tiff. Forget about .psd. Something wrong there.

http://www.newtek.com/forums/showthread.php?t=80107
It starts out with some idiot (umm.. that'd be me. ;) )whining about UV maps, but ends with some seriously cool node setups for displacement in LW.
Lots of good information regarding UV maps, LW and ZB.

There's gotta be some other hidden goodies .. otherwise they wouldn't be fussin' around so much putting the finishing touches on these mystery things.. The alpha-beta testers were using it without too much trouble by the looks of it, so for it to take so long to move into open beta, they've got to be adding something else.

I'll be disappointed if they're not .. frustration mounting by the second! Coming into work every morning, expecting to see Open Beta 9.5 forums but still seeing only 9.3.. blah! Ruins the whole day ;)

What i feel about this beta is it is gonna be released this week may be next week and we will get 9.5 in april NAB time i guess.

This time (although i complain like crazy) NT chose the right way, selected some fully devoted Bug Hunters ( i mean i have so much work and so critical work i cant hunt the bugs, Bugs hunt me) and those BugHunters gave couple of teasers for bringing Light upon us and they suddenly stopped teasing.. (thanks NT for that, it was painful enough to see and not to use).

So I guess a big bug-hunting party must be going on in a secret thread within these forum walls.. And this Public Open Beta will be just for us to test our hardware with LW, finding some extremely individual bugs etc. Because NAB must be the final for 9.5

Thanks for the Selected Bug hunters for taking a great deal of task from our shoulders.

For those who don't know what we are talking about, Vinton (now Laika) used to be a huge LightWave house back in the day. We did all those M&M commercials (for those who remember them). BTW, Will Vinton is famous for "Claymation".
I'm in SE over by Cinemagic. I mostly work for Bent Image Lab now so I don't get over to Laika very much. Well... Never really. :) I still have quite a few friends who work there but I never seem to get over there because it's over on the other side of town. Also its not that much diffireny from Bent as far as what we do. Ive really become jaded over the years from working on so many crap commercials that once you see one place that works ok commercials, you've pretty much seen them all. Ive discovered that it really doesn't matter how prety you make your environment, commercials are still going to suck the life out of you. :-)

Well he'll be able to tell you better than me, since he works there, but most job posts I've seen for them are MAX and C4D centric (maybe some maya too).

Ngrava- are you doing claymation at bent? I toured Laika a few years ago, and I must say it seemed "larger" than what I've heard about from friends who have worked at/with bent. I don't mean in terms of quality of projects, just that they did more projects and had a larger staff (doubt most are permanent) along side more facilities. I talked with one of the lead film (not house) TDs at the time, and he said they didn't use LW at all (or XSI for that mater), and that they were mainly a Maya house looking to shift more and more of their work towards Houdini. They seemed very PRman centered as well. I think the house side is more successful so far...but that's pure speculation on my part...

They had a lot of WVS memorabilia laying around...and it seemed a bit sad to me knowing what little I do about what that studio "used" to be like from the people I've met working there during and after the transition.

I've heard a lot of good and bad things about Bent- none of the bad had to do with the artists though! Should probably keep my yap shut though encase I show my ugly mug down there...

But if you want to divulge anything Ngrava I'd be more than happy to listen!!!

LOL! Yeah, Bent can be a crapy place to work too. As far as volume of work I don't know about Laika but from what I hear, the commecial division doesn't see as much as Bent. As far as size goes Laika is way bigger. Bent is a tiny little cramped space. We do stopmotion on four small stages an CG (mostly in Max with Vray) in one big room full of computers. As far as I know Laika does a lot of other stuff too. Anyway, I started out in Stopmotion at Vinton back in 1991. In 93 I was working for a director named David Daniels and he and I led the charge for CG there. He persionally bought a few Video Toasters and I spent a moth learning LightWave before jumping in way over our heads and that's how it all started. :)

I hear you put your finger into that ring shaped thing, and spin the device in a corresponding arrangement which is predetermined for each individual phone at each specified location, which then also corresponds to each particular person who has purchased said device (phone).
At which point, you put the aluminum food storage apparatus to your ear, and I understand from written communication with a relative of mine (Brother Zachariah), that this object can transmit by unknown magicks, vocals from one place to another! It is quite wondrous, quite wondrous indeed.

I asked this question myself and learned that IES lights have profiles that can be downloaded from the net. A manufacturer makes a new type of light fixture, they can also supply an IES file that allows you to use that fixture in 3D and have the light emitted look just like it would in the real one.

Here's some more info I just found:

True, in one sense it's not a fair comparison but on the other hand when I see CG hair I compare it to reality which is a much tougher test! That Cinema squirrel doesn't look good to me, I really hope FiberFX can do better than that! I have seen excellent hair come out of Cinema4d though.

What difference does it make? It's not out 'til it's out and you certainly have no less capability than you had prior to it being announced. If it takes them longer to get it ready, then so be it, that's what it takes.

Maybe I'm a little biased as most of the NewTek higher-ups have been personal friends of mine for well over 10 years, but knowing them for so long as many of us here have, it can easily be said that the announcement of the beta wasn't meant as some conspiracy/ploy. I'm quite certain that any announced dates were the intended dates, and as we move beyond those dates/timeframes it's on account of the OB not being ready for public consumption.

Things can take longer than expected even when they are going along perfectly fine. No bumps, no snags, no setbacks, nothing to cause a panic about, just perfectly reasonable progress but with more that we feel needs to be done before we're ready to pop this version out to a wider audience.

What I was wondering the other day was how Chuck could have said before Christmas that a new beta was quickly on its way, and four months later we still don't have it. I wonder if the decided to add new features or if I really don't understand how unpredictable programming can be. I mean how do you go from it will be a few days to 4 months?

I would be wondering in four months, too, except that starting from before Christmas I would wonder that in the middle of April instead of the middle of March. ;)

Seriously, yes, the definition and scope of the release changed, but that could not be communicated right away, unfortunately.

Thing can take longer than expected even when they are going along perfectly fine. No bumps, no snags, no setbacks, nothing to cause a panic about, just perfectly reasonable progress but with more that we feel needs to be done before we're ready to pop this version out to a wider audience.

What's weird about this statement is how it parallels what I am going through with a client at this exact moment. Exceptionally complicated project (I cannot provide details due to NDA) that is just grrriiiinding along which has required me to revise my scheduled completion date at least five times over the last two months.

In the last several meetings with the client I have stated the project is moving along beautifully, no bumps, no snags, no setbacks, nothing to worry about, sir.

And, actually, there ARE none of the above. Problem? Miscalculations on my part due to complexity issues. The client is fine with the setbacks because he understands who he is dealing with (and the money is fine because I priced in a schedule over-run buffer).

I had to mention this because, frankly, it strangely parallels my situation.

Steamthrower

Delay is nothing to get worried about. Right now the projects that clients are providing me aren't directly influenced by a new 9.5 release; I don't need fur, don't need new IK, don't need IES lights.

Don't need it enough that I'm on hold waiting for this beta to come out, that is. I'm sure everyone's the same way.

That furred rat is indeed fur from poser.. without photoshopping. (It's prohibited in ad images.) One gal has been doing nothing but hitting poser's hair/fur abilities for about a year, and she's done some amazing stuff.

Poser has had for it for about 3 years now, but like anything else, it takes someone with talent and perseverance to figure it out.

Tiny did a furred cat first, and just released the furred rat recently. She's also bug hunting for Poser's developers now as well.

I just thought Photoshop and trans map, because on the lower image on the rat's abdomen you can clearly see a line where the fur looks detached from the model, like you might get with a flawed trans map.

Well, it's not max or xsi quality, but for a program that consumers can buy for $50, it's pretty amazing.

Get ready, it's coming.

Make some space on your hard drives. LightWave v9.5 is getting very close to Open Beta launch. In a matter of days, you will be testing the
new, jealousy-inducing features of the latest free update to LightWave.

see... "DAYS".... that puts most people in mind of a certain time frame. as opposed to something like, oh, i don't know... "WEEKS".

you (newtek) didn't have to say ANYTHING. but you did. so if you had the time and thought to say "DAYS", seriously, is it too much to ask to come back and say, it's gonna be a bit longer folks when "DAYS" ain't gonna happen?

evidently "DAYS" turned to NOT-DAYS.... that is the bump and snag you should address.

Well it has been 10 days since this thread was started (and you quoted the starting post), and they DID come here and say something today (and in other places earlier). Since it would take 14 DAYS to linguistically qualify for WEEKS (the plural form of week), they are certainly within their margin of error. It has been a matter of DAYS and not yet two WEEKS.

Relax. "They aren't jerking us around." They are trying to do their jobs, just like you try to do yours.

Just for the sake of saying it.. for no reason other than that I feel like saying it...

There are alot of people frustrated over the whole deal. Granted, everyone here probably has something more important to be concerned about beyond the 9.5 OB. Granted, people should be more tolerant...

But, really, it would have been the courteous thing to do, to come back to one's own thread and say, "hey guys, it's been delayed, please understand." especially when there are literally hundreds, if not thousands of people anxiously waiting.

Maybe those waiting and getting anxious should get a life or something, but it's not unreasonable to expect that someone should allay the anxiety he has helped to cause.

We all live with deadlines and sometimes promise what we can't deliver, but how many of us say all is well to a client or a boss, and then just go all quiet when it's clear all is not going as planned?

As a producer, I must say that being quiet is a BAD thing to do. I don't go back to vendors who are silent, it adds stress. If something is taking longer, own up and tell me so I can push back on the AM or client. Its a part of efficient pipeline management.

I think people are forgetting something here; This is a BETA. Not a final product. NT will release it when they are damn well ready to do so. There is NO obligation to release a beta to the public unless they choose to.

Frankly with all the whining that happened recently, I would just cancel the open beta, and wait until the final product was complete and keep all beta testing internal. But hey, that's just me.

What's that saying, about cutting off your nose to spite your face? Way too many ungrateful people with poor manners in the forums here at times...

That could very well be.
However, the bitching and moaning didn't just start on its own; someone intentionally posted a message saying it would be just a matter of days.
What most people would consider "a matter of days" went by, and the natives became restless.
Still, it was yet another matter of days which passed before anyone said anything about it, in spite of the fact it was in-yer-face obvious many many people were getting restless at first, then angry, later.

How long does it take to type, "Sorry, there's been a delay. Stay posted"? Took me maybe ten seconds.

Of course, they're damned if they do, damned if they don't, but honesty IS always the best policy in situations like this, and if you back yourself into a corner and imply something that's being eagerly awaited by thousands, but you realize it can't be delivered within the implied time frame, there should be no time delay between the moment you realize that and the moment you announce it.
Being wrong isn't a sign of weakness.

Just got my 3dworld through the post today and they have a bit on 9.5 in there. Says some stuff that isn't mentioned really anywhere else. Been confirmed completely that fiberfx is infact fiber factory, but i think we all knew that anyway. Some stuff in there about the new character animation stuff, but it sounds like some of it may have been assumed rather than be fact. It hasn't sounded to me that the character animation has been overhauled, just added new tools to aid with what we have already, but maybe im wrong? I'd have thought that 3dworld know much more than i do as they have clearly had a press release from Jay and peeps and Newtek!

Ya, it feel's longer then "a few days", it doesn't surprise me; Newtek has been bad with releasing on time. Though if you think of video games, and maybe even movies, and other software companies, delays always happen. Jay or marketing should be more careful with the dates. Newtek and LW feel a lot like a video game, the dates move, at least its not Duke Nukem Forever! I hope the reason for the delays are to show us some great new features, workflows and tools. Stuff that we can show to others in this big 3D community and say yes, that’s LW.

So Fiber Factory is FiberFX, I hope it is well integrated into LW, both modeler and layout? I hope in modeler it uses modelers UI and not it’s own. For the bone/animation tools I wasn’t thinking that it was a totally new set-up like IK-Boost (it would be nice if they update that) but new functions to make set-up, rigging, animation, bone shapes, etc more user friendly. Oh and speed up the GL and deformations…we will see…

Even though 9.5 animaton not here yet, has anyone played with it rival messiah 3?

but again, if you had the time and inclination to RILE UP, why not take a moment to RILE DOWN? seriously, why the gap in communication there?

Well, one might say it's a lack of thought process, or even thoughtlessness...

But it's more likely it was forgotten or the reaction was overlooked. Hey, they're human.

However, one might ask oneself, is my enthusiasm at the moment overshadowing my judgment?

If the answer is Yes, or even Maybe, one should be prepared to jump right back in with an explanation.

People who expect their own expectations to come true are bound to be rightfully let down; people who expect what is told to them to be delivered have the right to be... dismayed if it doesn't happen.

However, now we know there were problems, so the issue is pretty much resolved. Not optimally, but at least we know what's up.

Now it's just a matter of us forum-dwellers arguing over who is right - those who are complacently supportive, or those who are subjectively judicial.

Consternation over the holdup of a beta which includes a fur feature, IES lighting and UV enhancements appears to be missplaced and unnecessary, if not downright strange.

IES lighting is an excellent addition to the feature set but not critical, same with fur and UV's. PLG will work superbly for the moment with UV's as it has for quite some time. And you've worked for years without IES lights.

It is emotionally inefficient to make waves over this. Seriously. This has nothing to do with camp-mentalities.
