"Would you also be interested in having a go with DFX+ on a VT3 machine?"

Nope

"How many of you like to play video games?"

Your point being?

How about less fluff and more specifics? Like an up front statement that this only applies to those who can physically get to Siggraph, and has nothing to do with a beta or anything else that the vast majority of your customer base can touch, let alone benefit from.

I mean come on Will, you guys (and many others) moaned when Luxology confused the LW community by making vague claims / posts ..... and here you are doing pretty much the same thing on your own boards!

I can understand the desire to raise interest in Siggraph and LW8 (like there wasn't enough already), but from where I'm standing this teasing just doesn't look very professional at all.

If you have something to announce, do so.

Tricksy, isn't he?

This is kinda aggravating cause I'm in Israel so there's no way I can make it to Siggraph. The only thing I get out of Siggraph every year is the software previews and reviews that follow.

I almost made it two years ago. I was with my sis and bro-in-law, who weren't really interested but said they'd go in for a bit. I went up to the desk and learned that it cost something like $70 per person. So I turned around and walked away... *sniff*

I'm not really ticked at Newtek, though. That DFX+ deal was a killer, I'm still just digging into that and LW 7.5 (I've been a 6.5er for a while).

S'funny innit?
I admit, I initially got excited at the thought, but then realised it was probably marketing hype.

You know, all the naysayers once again surfacing, wierd!
You see these kind of 'tease tactics' all the time for other products, heck, even other 3D products, but somehow, when it's Newtek, out come the whiners and moaners. If its MAX or MAYA - hey fiar game, a new car, well of course, the latest phone, well naturally. Latest Lightwave - "hell Newtek need to sort themselves out" ;)

These same people, I can almost guarantee, will moan about LW8 when it *is* released, regardless of what it does.
Any takers ..... Hmmm thought not! ;)

What this *will* do, is make those going to Siggraph fall over each other to get to what I guess is the yearly Newtek Bash. Exactly the result Proton was after I'll wager :)

The Newtek bash ... the one they do ... every year ...at Siggraph ... when they release stuff ...like they have done... for years ... and those who know ... would kinda expect that!

Thought I'd 'say' it slow for the hard of understanding :D

Thanks to everyone for being part of our two day teaser campaign. With over 11,000 views as of 10am San Antonio time, it was successful beyond our expectations. You've been patient, you've made guesses about what we're doing, you've ranted, and you've raved -- now it's time to let you know what we're up to, clearly and in detail. You'll find there's something here for everyone.

For months now, the team at NewTek has been preparing our roll out of LightWave [8] for SIGGRAPH. These plans have evolved as the software has evolved, but a party the night before SIGGRAPH opened has always been part of the plan.

We've been to a lot of so-so parties over the years, so we've given a lot of thought to what our users would want in a party. Too often, SIGGRAPH parties are overloud and under-creative and they don't offer many entertainment or networking options.

So, on the Monday night before SIGGRAPH, we're throwing a different kind of party... one designed with our users in mind. There will be the usual drinking, food and talking options, and there will be music -- but it's going to be kept at a low volume, to give atmosphere, not kill conversation. You'll have chance to meet and talk with members of the LightWave team in a casual, relaxed atmosphere. When we considered what our users would enjoy, we also decided to add things like video games (ones created with LightWave, of course) and computers. No canned speeches, no boring corporate yapping. And what better to have on computers than things like; Digital Fusion / DFX+ and of course LightWave[8]. We'll be doing demos of LW[8] all during SIGGRAPH, but this party will be the only chance for you to get your hands on LightWave[8] during the show.

More details about the party will be released in the next few days, including a complete list of our partners and co-sponsors, as well as the exact time and location information. We're working on the web page right now.

We know that many of you will not be able to attend SIGGRAPH... we'd love to bring all of you, but we can't. However, we do want you to share in the Eight-citement. So, in addition to our live web stream from the show floor, to celebrate [8], we're giving away eight great prizes, everything from DVDs of films and TV shows created with LightWave to video game systems to software, including (duh!) LightWave [8]. And you don't have to attend SIGGRAPH to enter and win. You can do it from wherever you are right now. Again, you'll have to wait for the web page for rules and entry options, so get ready to enter.

You've all been great sports, so there's going to be no more teasing. LightWave [8] has so much cool stuff in it that we can't contain ourselves. Look for multiple posts over the next week or so that will show you some of the new tools and work flow for LightWave [8] and even some technology previews of what's coming in later releases of LightWave 8.x. Of course, because we're NewTek, those are going to be free upgrades with new tools when you buy LightWave [8]. We want you to learn what the team members are working on, and to see firsthand where we are heading with your favorite 3D software.

One more thing... we want you to know that there are dozens of people at NewTek who have been burning the midnight oil for months to make sure that the time and money you've invested in LightWave is a solid investment for years to come. Yesterday's Emmy nominations -- where the nominees are stacked with LightWave users -- are just the most recent example of NewTek's dream that has become reality; to create the most affordable, easiest to use professional 3D software package that works for both the user in Hollywood as well as for 'regular' users, from videographers to graphic artists to hobbyists to scientist to dreamers around the world.

You'll be seeing LightWave ads in magazines and on the internet in the next few months that mention that LightWave has the best and most active user community in the world. Everyone here at NewTek believes that. Sometimes we may do things that bug you, and sometimes you do things that bug us - that's normal for families. Families bicker and squabble, but they remain family. At the end of the day, though, we want you to know how much we appreciate all of you, our family of users.

The best is yet to come, for all of us.

William Vaughan

On behalf of the entire LightWave team at NewTek.

and why wouldn't newtek do videos??

if a remember correctly..it was newtek that lead the way with a live broadcast of their siggraph presence over the net..and a good quality broadcast signal too...via newtek's video toaster...in comparison a huge outfit like discreet offered nothing...just a small bit of text on thier website...

who's leading the way???
and who's following.....

Let's refrain from comment on personalities, please. I've removed a post for same, and would like not to have to remove more.

Thank you for your cooperation.

Well, here's to NewTek and LightWave 8 blowing everybody out of the water at SIGGRAPH!
Wish I could be there, sounds like a lot of fun.
At least we'll have video, and contests too!

You guys should run a live feed from the party.
Now that would be a riot! :D

I don't know you, but if you are asking questions so you can take swipes at NewTek I'll just stop answering your questions.

Anyway, I was just wondering if they were going to do something lame like post blurry screenshots, like usual.

Actually NewTek has always been good about posting full resolution, low compression screenshots.

Oh and, thanks NewTek! I really wish I could go there this year. The drive isn't the problem, but rather just coming up with the extra cash to enter - gotta save it for LW8. :) Maybe next year you guys could give out a few free tickets via a contest on your website? That would make you guys even cooler...

But PLEASE Newtek, tell us that the Mac users will be able to access the feed this year. Last time the stream was not set up for us Mac users to view, you needed a PC.

Please don't forget us Mac users who cannot attend this year.

Thanks!

Cooool........:D

The one thing that has been lost in all of this though (god I wish I was at that party:) ) sorry little thinking out loud, it is this..

Newtek by the sound of it are raising the bar by a very large ammount it is up to us as the artisitc side of the partnership to create our future art work, projects, games, animations etc etc.. that will also raise and hopefully go way beyond what we can currently create as artists.

With both sides delivering THEN we can say we really do have a kick arse product and kick arse artistic ability! :D

"Newtek by the sound of it are raising the bar by a very large ammount"

Hmmm. An unprintable Pulp Fiction quote comes to mine. Harvey Keitel's response to "Wow, I can't believe this is the same car"

I'm excited too but I'm gonna at least wait till I see a few screenshots before I put on my knee-pads.

I think it was not until the last day of the show last year that we corrected the streaming issue that affected Mac users. I will remind the web team of the issue.

:) wouldn't broadcast too loudly that LW8 has a real undo function.

but darn good to see it for those few mistakes.

few know how sophisticated multiple undos for this sort of software can be.

happy happy joy joy.

aren't toys what it's all about?

cheers Newtek
