I'll bet you could use the clothFX trick used for footprints.

I think I'll post whenever I feel like it thank you.
I was just looking for a little more detail into what you wanted. You were specifically asking about how to "engrave" the box?

i have a box and i want to have a flat plate that has a logo protruding from it almost like a cattle prod, and have the plate press against the box and leave the logo engraved into the box

How about a morph? or object replace?

Kedstudios, it's kind of hard to reply when we don't have a specific knowledge of your problem. See, if I knew a bit more then I could recommend a technique, like animate a bumpmap if you don't need a camera close-up, or use ClothFX if you really need a geometry reduction thingamajig...

Would it work to press the stencil against it, and as the stencil is covering up the engraved section, replace the object with an engraved version? (I probably didn't describe that very well)

that is what i thought, but i was wondering if there was a better way to do it. i didnt know if there was an animation ability that could do an effect like that

Nope - iconoclasty has the best idea imho - as long as your rectangle isn't moving and therefore won't suffer from any motion blur problems should you decide to use motion blur then object replacement is the best way. Just use 'object dissolve' in the unengraved and engraved objects 'properties' panel to fade one in as the the other goes out. If your'e not seeing the transition then no need for anything more complex :)
