I've just been asked to come up with a cheap way to stream a video feed to show daily school news to a whole Jr. High school of 1000+ students... I'm thinking about 30 classrooms and about 10 offices. All have computers with 100 MB connections and are at the oldest 4 years old running XP or 2000. I'm thinking a small server would fit the bill, but I've never done this before. The reason why this has been tossed my way because they do not want to dish out 1000's of dollars on installing a CCTV system... And seeing itís a school district they need to save money where they can.

Help?

Look on the Apple Site. I think you can setup a Quicktime Media Server for free, except for a computer that is fast enough to run it. ;-)

I'd look into it. Quicktime Media seems to be easier to setup than an AVI / WMV solution.

no offense to Will but don't even think about quicktime streaming... It is not worth the time and effort.

The largest percentage of streaming video viewers are on Windows Media.
The second and rapidly growing group is on Flash.
Third, Fourth are Quicktime and Real.

If you have a Windows 2003 server at your disposal then you can quickly setup what you need.

If you need consulting work done then contact me. There is some voodoo magic involved but once you do 10 or 20 times it is fairly straight forward. :)

Thanks... I just had a talk with the people that want to do this and they want to multicast... I'm thinking I should be able to do the same thing with Server 2003 Enterprise... I just need to get a capture card... Any more input on the matter?

It's reasonably simple to set up a multicast stream - but multicast needs to be enabled on any switches on their internal network. Otherwise you can multicast with a unicast rollover.
