View Full Version : Want to have an object fade transparency based upon Y axis

I have a complex shape that I want to have the very bottom of go entirely transparent. The object should feather from totally transparent at its base to totally opaque at the top.

The camera is moving thru large changes of scale relative to the object so I didn't think that this was something that I could do based upon a gradation editor.

Nor can I figure out how to do this using maps.

Any suggestions?

You wouldn't worry about the camera scale I don' think. The gradient could be applied to the object based on a Linear weightmap that you can create with the Weights tool set to Linear on the y.

Or you could use Y distance to object and parent a null to the base of the object. Y distance to pivot would give you the same result if the base is at 0,0,0.

But if you want the gradient to follow complex contours of the object that would be different. You could do that with a weightmap or UV map but a little more complex to create.

Thanks for your suggestions. The null object was just what I needed to do.

I always have 90% of the knowledge that I need to do a job. If only computers would cut a guy some slack!
