Ive been tasked with producing a screensaver animation* -kinda moving wofty wave effect. Ive attached a pic to give an idea of what im aiming for! (mac is so gonna sue my ***)

Any ideas on how to approach this a working example would be even better.

You'd start off by breaking the task into components/methods you know Lightwave can handle. Ie. model, texture, animation.

I quickly created a plane, subdivided, and a weight map for the HOLD edges (edges =100%, all else 0%).

Then in Layout I created the gradient transparency according to incident angle.

Then applied teh cloth dynamic with a cotton default setting, with -9.81 gravity in the Y axis. I saved that info out as an MDD file, and set to local so I could clone it, thus acheiving a layered effect.

That would be just the start, then you'd need to tweak until you like your results.

Here are the screenshots.

*Ultimately* I would do something like this in After Effects, where I have control of masks and splines.
