I was wondering if anyone knew of the easiest way to build a coil or a spring. In the tutorials that I have from 3d Garage it talks about building a chain. If you are familiar with that tutorial he builds a chain using the curve commands. I was going to do that but then move the pollys vertically to form one rotation of the coil. this seems to me to be a tedious job and was wondering if there might be an easier way of doing it?

Try watching this tute by WV. You'll learn more than how just to make a spring.

great tut. has helped in the modeler phase but when I send the object to layout, the object is there but is unseen when the weight map applied. It is visible only if the weight map is not applied to the spring. any suggestions on why i cant see it?

Did you make the weight map from the initial UV, as in UV to weight? That allows you to make a morph target easily, the other method is Bkg to morph.

-Where are you applying it in Layout? You don't need one if you are just compressing the spring.
