View Full Version : Distributed render on 8 core Mac

I was wondering if it is more efficient to render using LWSN and distribute the scene to all 8 processors, or render using 8 threads?

Has anyone tried this? Any speed differences?

the main bottleneck is ram.
the rule of thumb is : if you have between 1 - 2 gigs of ram per processor then use multiple nodes, otherwise do a threaded render. there used to be less multithreading support in the renderer, but lately its gotten so good that its rare to find a render that doesn't multithread pretty well.

It also depends on your scene and which Mac you'll be rendering on. Here are some benchmarks (http://dreamlight.com/insights/10/config_files.html#Multithreading) on an 8-core 3GHz Mac Pro (first generation) and a Dual Processor 2GHz G5 (first generation) using LightWave 9.3.1 UB and ScreamerNet 9.3.1 UB with various thread settings...
