Hi guys,

Back from being away from LightWave since v.8.5.

Changed platforms along the way and I am now primarily on a Mac Intel machine, so two Qs there:
a. Does Fprime 3.1 work with UB v.9.3.1?
b. Does the Hyperstars/Hyperspace/Hyperglow plugins work with UB v.9.3.1?

I asked these two Qs in the General Support area, but thought, being 3rd party Qs, maybe some users may have a better idea rather than NewTek... (so sorry for repeating myself).

Also, I'll ask here as well, is UB v.9.3.1 good-to-go as being the latest version of UB LightWave? (reason I ask is, I still see the Beta version in my downloads area, so I'm a tad confused..)

Thanks much and good to be back in LightWave,
deg

No. There is no supported way of using FPrime and LW on Intel Macs. FPrime is currently only available for the old PowerPC (CFM) LW release, but this is not supported by NewTek or Worley on Intel Mac.

No PowerPC plugins (for CFM LW) will function on UB LW - if you have such plugins, pester your vendor. LScripts should generally be fine, but those handling files may need updates (e.g. Maestro 2 required work for UB LW compatibility).

It depends on what you mean by good-to-go - there are a number of issues that will cause some frustration (general responsiveness, even after disabling the hub, is not great).

Still, you'll find the release version of 9.3.1 UB LW listed below the beta version (I'm not sure why NewTek have the beta release still shown on register.newtek.com - it's caused many people to be confused).

Hi again deg,

Just answered your other question in the other thread, but for these ones:

a. No, FPrime does not work in the UB. Only plugins that have been compiled as universal binaries will work in the universal version of LightWave and FPrime hasn't been yet;
b. Same thing applies. I see that the Hyper series of plugins have not been updated in a while so the author might not be aware of the existence of the UB version of LightWave and would appreciate a nudge telling them they need to recompile? ;)

Thanks very much guys for your responses.

I now have email sent to Worley and Filip (Hyperstuff guy).

I know CFM is the PowerPC version, but just curious, what does CFM stand for?

Thanks again,

CFM - Code Fragment Manager
It's the native run time environment for Classic MacOS

Thanks very much Scazzino. It's good to be informed as much as possible. :)

I emailed Ficatech a while ago, asking whether they were going to port Hyperstars to the Mac UB. I never got any response.

I know that Maas Digital has ported StarPro (http://www.maasdigital.com/starpro/) to the UB. They have a resolution-limited demo available. The full version is a bit more pricey than Hyperstars, though. :(

Thanks dude. :)

Have you tried that StarPro? For a $499 plugin it better spit out gold.

Well, it is a site license - which isn't that bad. Unless you need really high resolutions the TV version should be enough for most people, and that is only $150.

Cheers,
Mike

Thanks Mike. I'll look into it soon if Filip remains MIA for too much longer.

Hope he's alright.

And nice use of the word: obfuscate BTW. I like words, and it's good to see infrequently used ones used.

Thanks. Well, to be quite honest it is a reference to http://www.ioccc.org/

Admittedly something only nerds appreciate ;)

Your funny quote reminds me of Life of Brian's: Blessed are the cheese-makers...

Ah the lyrics use one of my favorite words at the end: cacophony.

Good message, IMO. Reminds me of Jesus blasting the Pharisees for their blatant hypocrisy, them supposedly standing at the gates of heaven, but always pointing out everyone else's failings, not letting anyone in, while they themselves cannot even go in themselves... ah yes, the do as we say, not as we do power-mad delusion. LOL

Truthfully, from what I tried of the demo, the results are nearly identical to Hyperstars. Not sure it's really worth the price. I wish the old free Stars.p plugin that was posted on the old LightwaveGroup forum was still available (I did save a copy, myself, but I can't remember who the author was now :stumped: ). That one would've been cool to see ported to UB, even if it wasn't free.

Thanks dude, I will check out the demo. Not familiar with the Stars.p plugin, but if it's not ported for UB, no use to me now as I'm not goin' back to my G4 after enjoyin' and getting used to the speed of my Mac Pro. :)
