Is there any way to make my character not disappear while I rotate or adjust bones?

In Display Options (click D), increase Bounding Box Threshold to accomodate the number of polys in your character/scene. This may slow down GL update depending on how high the poly count and other things. So alternatively you may want to use a lower poly version of your object while keyframing.

To add to what Dave said,
If youre character is subpatched reduce the display subpatch to speed things up. I also tend to speed it up further if I have to by reducing the bounding box threshold so that while Im posing the polys disappear AND deformations are not calculated until you let go of the mouse button.
When character animating you really dont want to mix the animation aspect with deformations. Its best to separate those out because while you animate you want things to move as speedily as possible. :)
