View Full Version : Help! Color banding!

Hi guys, I have a quick question:

In all my renders, I'm getting bad color-banding.

Example:

It's hard to see in this pic, but look close. Zoom, if you can!

Why won't the renders gradate smoothly?
It's annoying, and un-profesional-looking.
What do I do to get rid of this? Does it have anything to do with bit-depth?
I've tried lots of things, but nothing seems to help.

-Thanks

I think its your camera... Try changing it to perspective instead of real lens.

Perhaps render to 16 bits instead of 8 bits and convert it in post? You might be bumping into the gradation limits of 8 bits.

Um, where do I tell LW to render in 16 bit instead of 8? Because whenever I render out images, the render viewer says they're either 128 or 32 bits, depending on whether or not I have the full-precision renderer on.

You always have the full precision renderer on unless you specifically tell it not to be, but the difference between Image Viewer and Image Viewer FP is that the FP stands for full precision. Use that and save your images in a high-bit format like EXR to maintain the colour bandwidth.
