I'm new to Lightwave and was trying to find out if it is possible to use photoshop files and import them into Lightwave? If so, how do they need to be saved in PS?

use them in what way? as a texture map? PNG seems to be a pretty popular format for texture maps these days as they are a lossless compressed format. Or did you want to use the photoshop files for some other purpose?

you can load a psd file straight into LW. I don't think all the layers use more memory, I think it basically just flattens the image or something like that...

If you want to generate geometry, you can also export eps files from photoshop (export/paths) and import to create geometry from selections and paths, tho going through illustrator is advisable to tidy them up and fill them if you want them as solids ...
