I am trying to make landing gear come out, extend from a ship, and touch the ground, but when they rotate I am having problems with some of the parts which get smaller in the middle of the rotation. (see attached video) Is their any way to do this without bones and weight maps? thank you.

Dont use morphs for something like that. The points move in a linear path from one morph to another and this will distort the mesh at some point.

As Splinegod mentioned, the vertices move linearly between morphs, which is why the main strut gets shorter in the middle of the morph.
You'd be better off modeling these in a physically accurate way and keyframing the movements. Make each moving part a separate layer in the object.
