View Full Version : Bump map to normal map...

Hi All,
I have a bump map texture done in the usual layered way. I'd like to replace it with a (node based) normal map with the same tiling and position etc.

Given the much better effect of a normal compared to a bump this must be a very common task - is there an easy way to do this?

Thanks,
Nick

You could copy all bump layers,
pasting them in a Layer Bump node,
and there's a Bump To Normal node
in DP Kit.

Denis.

DP Kit?

DP Kit?

Ah thanks, I'll take a look. In the mean time, and trying to do it manually, (not a bad thing to know how to do!), I'm getting a bit lost.

The bump map I am using is cylindrically mapped, and I can't see an equivalent to the 'width wrap' parameter in the layered approach.

Any clues anyone please?

Width Wrap and the panel itself is identical in the "layered" nodes.
If you read Dponts post he mentions to copy your layers to a layered bump node.
as opposed to the standard image node.

Ah, thanks - I was using an image node.

I guess you can do that with this soft
http://www.crazybump.com/

or this:
http://www.xnormal.net/Faq.aspx
from the page:
Q: What is xNormal?
A: xNormal is an application to generate normal / ambient occlusion / parallax displacement maps. It can also project the texture of the highpoly model into the lowpoly mesh ( complete texture transfer, even with different topologies ). Includes too an interactive 3D viewer with multiple mesh and textures format support, shaders and realtime shadowing / glow effect.
To finish, comes with some useful tools like height map - normal map - cavity map - occlusion - tangent/object space tools.
