I had what seemed a good idea - I wanted to make a spherical tank with a fairly detailed texture.

So I created a sphere, with create UV selected.
Made a copy of the object.
Started stenciling in details - this I figured would be more accurate than painting one.
I then baked to the UV map, figuring this would give me the detail I wanted without the high polygon count or smoothing errors.

What came out looked pretty awful though... I attach a normal render and the baked map I got. Don't worry abut the lighting, what concerns me is the way that my carefully cut disks have come out all blocky!

Can someone explain where I am going wrong please?

Sorry man, can't offer any obvious thoughts, especially given the stencilling.
Well, maybe one... map resolution? if the map is low -res then there may not be sufficient pixels to correctly represent the stencilled details?

Just a wild guess. May be worth upping the map size?
