Hi all,

Here is a list of the currently-available Universal plug-ins for LightWave 9.3. If you are a plug-in author write to this thread and I will update this first post. I've mainly written about commercial plug-ins in this list so far because they tend to be easier to find, but the more the merrier! It's also worth noting here that LScripts work fine on the Universal version but that compiled ones won't.

In no order:

This is not really the thread for that question. This is a thread for the release of UB (9.3 and above) Mac plugins... you might want to ask in another thread relating to all plugins, just imo.

So where are all the new plugins for LW Mac UB? I thought the UB was supposed to make porting things to Mac so much easier. So far the list in this topic is awfully short. Fiber Factory still hasn't appeared in any form on Mac, UB or otherwise. We know we probably shouldn't bother holding our breath for Worley to port Sasquatch or Saslite to the UB. I emailed Ficatech asking when Hyperstars might appear on the UB (at least it runs on PPC), but have not heard back. StarPro is way too expensive for what it does (basically what Hyperstars does). I'm not even going to bother asking about MeshPaint (again, at least I have the PPC version). But what about all the other tools? Do we have to nag all of the developers individually?

Phil

FiberFactory is on the way, but for UB only. CodeWarrior is obsolete and the developer, Jon Tindall, even if he were interested, could not locate a copy.

When I last asked a few weeks ago, Jon had started having issues with his G4 hardware and is therefore planning to pick up a new machine shortly. So...FF4 is coming to Mac - it's just taking a little while longer than many of us hoped for. I'm itching to get my hands on it. The Windows version is wonderful.

That's good news! UB only is just fine with me. The Lightwave UB is so much faster than the CFM version (even on a G4) that I would prefer to use the UB exclusively. FiberFactory is the one plugin I'm looking most forward to getting. Customer satisfaction appears to be very high, from what I've observed.

Is Fiber Factory similar to what SasLite is/was? By that I mean will there be a free plugin version and is it useful for things like hair & fur? Given the name I assume it probably is.

Puguglybonehead

FiberFactory (http://www.binaryartsinc.com/FiberFactoryIV.htm) is indeed a hair/fur plugin for Lightwave (actually, a set of plugins). Similar to Sasquatch but with more capabilities (as far as shadow-casting, reflections, etc...). It's not free, but the price seems pretty reasonable.

It does look good but that price will be prohibitive. I've got 18 school computers with LightWave on them and quite frankly that is more per license than we paid for each license of LW. I've got to hope that SasLite will eventually get ported over to the UB because I don't have $5400 laying around to spend (let alone upgrade on a regular basis)

Oh well, not much I can do about it except ask, Pretty Please, Give Us Back SasLite.

Phil
11-14-2007, 10:53 PM
For the price, FF4 is better value for money (in my view, obviously), than Sasquatch. You have support for the raytracing pipeline (reflections, refractions, raytraced shadows) thanks to the voxel approximation system (although there are significant improvements here as and when Jon updates the implementation). You have higher quality hair and fur (based on images I have seen; I don't have Sasquatch and only had fleeting access to a copy some time ago).

You also have a styling tool. It's lacking some real life tool abstractions that would be interesting to use (e.g. a block braid tool, a comb) and the UI is a little odd in that area, but you can also style your hair using Modeler's tools.

Jon's probably open to negotiation, though, so if you find the price too steep, send him an email :) He's never been less than totally helpful and responsive.

No free version is likely. There was a demo version, but it got pulled because the main plugin saw updates and a demo version was not restored to the site because the plugin was changing quite quickly (massive savings in memory load, very significant changes in render speed, etc.) and Jon didn't want to keep rolling out demo versions.

That said, give him a mail. He'll probably hook you up with a demo version.

BatchBakingCamera is now available on Macintosh UB 32 bit and 64 bit, Intel & PowerPC.

http://batchbakingcamera.trueart.eu

TrueArt's Batch Baking Camera is LightWave v9.6 Layout plug-in to automate baking surfaces.

It is tool especially interesting for game makers and artists converting LightWave specific objects (with complex node trees, procedural textures or shaders) to any other 3D package like Autodesk Maya, 3ds Max, Maxon Cinema 4D, Houdini, 3D party renderers, anything which cannot understand directly LightWave shading extensions.

The tool not only allows using whole power of renderfarm in baking surface process, but it's also approximately 400% faster than LightWave v9.6 built-in Surface Baking Camera, making it even more attractive product.

A whole batch of updates to DP plugins in the past couple of days - a massive thank you to Denis Pontonnier (http://dpont.pagesperso-orange.fr/main_en.htm) and Michael Wolf (http://www.db-w.com/) for their dedication and hard work. These plugins are all key to my workflow, and I can't imagine using Lightwave without them. Of exceptional note is the new-to-mac Verdure plugin! Can't wait to try it out. :D

DP Kit (http://dpont.pagesperso-orange.fr/plugins/nodes/Additionnal_Nodes_2.html)

DP Filter (http://dpont.pagesperso-orange.fr/plugins/nodes/DP_Filter.html) (available in both 9.6 and 10.0 versions)

DP Light (http://dpont.pagesperso-orange.fr/plugins/lights/Additional_Lights.html)

DP Instance (http://dpont.pagesperso-orange.fr/plugins/DP_Instance.html)

Verdure (http://dpont.pagesperso-orange.fr/plugins/Verdure/DP_Verdure.html)

Sunsky Texture (http://dpont.pagesperso-orange.fr/plugins/Sunsky.html)

Verdure, unfortunately, needs a bit more dev time before it'll work in OSX (actually, both Win 64bit and OSX UB versions have been pulled from the site for now). The others seem to be running reasonably well in both 9.6 (32bit) and 10.1 (64bit), albeit a few inconsistencies, and I haven't tested all of the plugins...so I could be missing something big.

I'm super lucky; my bosses know how much work I do, and got a machine to handle it. I did max out all 32GB of ram the other week, though, when rendering a 25+ million polygon scene in multiple instances of Lightwave (one Layout, one screamernet). Crazy. And in the end, it rendered frames at double-HD (nearly 4k, with translucency + 4 bounce radiosity, complex node setups, etc.) in under two hours. I was pretty happy. :D

I can just shake my head in awe...thats awesome for you...Its great when your employer treats you nice, and knows that you need good hardware to get the job done fast and efficient. Always a great place to go to in the AM.
