Hey all:
As mentioned previously, I'm looking at purchasing a barebones workhorse computer for net rendering.

I've narrowed it down to a Core 2 Duo E6850 or a Quadcore Q6600 for about the same price (~$600).

Looking at some benchmarks on the web, the E6850 outperforms the Q6600 in all tasks except rendering a 50 frame Cinema 4D animation:

Clone DVD:
E6850: 6:55
Q6600: 8:24

Filter a 69 MB file in PShop
E6850: 1:39
Q6600: 2:01

Single Frame Max Render
E6850: 0:39
Q6600: 0:47

Render 50 frames from "Water Drop at a Rose" (1280 x 1024)
E6850: 3:41
Q6600: 2:34

Its been my experience that when net rendering, my 3.2GHz HT shows up as 2 CPUs, and each performs a render at about the same speed as it takes to do an F9 while working in LW. So the more processors, the better, but I'd be interested to hear others' opinions.

Thanks.

I'd get the quad hands down, especially for rendering.
Also, the Q6600 ought to be a lot cheaper at the moment - unless your price is for the whole system.

Cheers,
Mike

Thanks.
Its for the box, mobd, RAM, HD, DVD, etc.
No OS or monitor.

I also found a thread on this exact topic at SQ:

That's a sweet deal then. If you look at the numbers, the Q6600 is 40% faster in the 50 frame render, which I think is the most realistic benchmark for what you have in mind.

Hehe, I replied on the other thread weeks ago as well it seems ;)

Cheers
