Just FYI, http://www.nvidia.com/page/gz_home.html

LW left in the cold once again. Someone wrote a plugin for Blender. LW anyone... anyone...

Gelato can read RIB files, so a LW to RenderMan translator may work, but where can I find one? :D.

Yeah, here:
started it, perfomance was horrible, so I stopped it.....

ok, to be fair, I do not have a quadro here, wich might explain a lot, but not a minimum of 5-6 time slower output with absolutely NO raytrace happen and without any complex shader used.

if someone with a quadro can to convince me, he actually HAS faster
render times (by testing the blender version), I might reactivate it, but until then... project halted.

I got Gelato prior they had a demo version and also a Quadro to test it, the renderer wasn't using the GPU very often, it was slow.

Hmm... poking around online-

Lightman does not appear updated since LW7-

Light-R support to v8-

Am always reminded of when I tried to get Endorphin to work with LW. Basically they didnt care about helping me since there was so no LW market (apparently I was the only user to ask about it at for months after intro at Siggraph 05). An iffy FBX plugin was the only way to convert files and Alias didnt care about supporting LW either. Vertical uphill battle. I barely managed to get a complex character rig into Endorphin. Was too much work, so gave up.

So, would Gelato be a better alternative to Fprime if it worked with Lightwave? I'm curious if it actually runs well in Maya using a Geforce card, or do you have to have a $2k Quadro to really make use of it. Which, if that's the case, Gelato seems like a great marketing plan by Nvidia to rope people into buying high end Quadro cards.

Gelato has been developed by the same people (at least initially) who developed the Blue Moon Renderng Tools (used minimally in the movie A Bug's life) and Entropy, both RenderMan compliant renderers. Gelato is very similiar to a RenderMan renderer but using the GPU paradigm, maybe it has some things diffrent because Pixar sued Ex-luna (maker of Entropy). Gelato is far from being realtime or anything related so is not like Fprime.

I don't know anyone who uses Gelato in production, btw.
