Is there a version of KW Edge Smoother for Mac, or any free plugin that lets me do what KW Edge Smoother does?

I basically want to bevel off the edges so they're not so sharp. Can't find any good, free plugins that do the job.

Rounder comes with LW and does this.
DPKit is free and comes with a shader that simulates bevels.

KW_EdgeSmoother just gives a better result than rounder. I would say it has a better polyflow. I wrote to Mr. K. Watanabe to see if he would consider doing a 64-bit version, but the plugin has not been updated since 2001 (amazing that LW at least in 32-bit mode can still run plugins that old!).

BTW, Larry! So great to see you around again. I hope you and your family are doing fine! (I just realized this is an old post, but I've seen some actual new posts from you around)

Oliver.

Hey Larry! Same here: very glad to see you up and about and helping the LW community. My best wises for your continued recovery.

Oh and Happy Digital's EdgeFX used to do a great job of faking edge bevels, but their plug-ins seem to have largely been left to wither. Unless you can use it with LW 9.x

Hmmm, AM'I only one seeing that Larry's post is from 2007 ?

I just compared KW_EdgeSmoother with Lightwaves Edge Bevel. They are actually similar. But KW has a smoothing angle function that allows it to create less detail where less is needed. Rounder creates more geometry than I would expect for some cases and sometimes makes weird holes when the angle it finds is not convex, but otherwise it is fairly decent.

So even though KW_EdgeSmoother is still useful, it's really not like we don't have anything like it today.

(And yeah, that's and old post, but Larry is most certain back!)

so can't Rounder do this? > http://www.mmm.ne.jp/~waken/edgesm/index_e.html

edit: hm, i guess not... edge bevel has similarities though...

yes, an Edge Bevel smoothing angle would have been alright... > http://www.mmm.ne.jp/~waken/edgesm/img16.JPG

I really wish someone would take Rounder and finish it off. Richard Brak did a great job but it was a sort of part-time hobby for him. It works on fairly basic meshes but any degree of complexity creates all sorts of weirdness that takes ages to clean up. NewTek should take this tech and make a killer, all-singing edge bevel tool.
