The 4 sub-categories made it a tad different and a bit refreshing compared to most online/movie polls.

K.I.T.T. was NOT that cool.

ok it wasn't THAT good.
Good to see Bicentennial Man at the bottom though.
Coolness: 0 Dangerousness: 0 Comedy Value:0
Amen to that. Robin Williams in a nutshell :D

And.. HELLOOOO... Daleks? Ok, not amazing, but they should be on there, certainly above 'Hector' from "Saturn 3", that was lame. Oh wait, they're not really robots - But no Crighton?? 11 for comedy, man.

And Cylons... which Cylons?? Old or new? They should have two different places.

I think this was put together by one person, it's all his own opinion. I mean, Silent Running and a robot from *one* scene in Logan's Run, above the T2 robot? The Matrix Sentinels 14 places behind them in 34th place?? That's what they call b-***-akwards.

Kit!!? no 3?...

Well open for debate... telly movies? - surely Lost in Space aired with a feature length premier, giving us one of the best robots, 'Robot'.

Dalek is a great suggestion, what about the Cybermen?

No Iron Giant!

That thing in the film Virus?

Loads there are not even robots! Vger? Hal? I'd say you are stretching it with Kitt... I haven't even heard of a fair number of them. It should be ten robots tops.

Daleks are not robots, by cyborgs. (Creatures in suits).

Definitely rifght about Kryton though, funniest robot ever.

Good to be reminded of Johnny 5 though, I always had a soft spt for the 'Short Circuit' film.

Another vote for ED 209!

I have the Criterion Collection, Unrated Director's Cut of Robocop. Here ED 209 gets to make an excessive mess when he pulps that suit, who fails to comply in a timely manner :)

Paul Verhoven rocks!

I have the uncut edition too, Mr. Kinney takes a pummeling in that version!

Also, it's not that he doesn't comply, apparently, "he (ED-209) didn't hear the gun drop"

Cherry 2000, lol i thought that was great when i was 10.

Pitty they missed out the cool tv show robots... also would lead me believe it was cylon v1 in the list.

I was glad to see the ABC robot from Judge Dredd beat R2-D2.

Never did trust that little trashcan.

R2D2 :
Plausability : 9 Coolness : 1 Dangerousness : 1 Comedy : 3

They did include Knight Rider(#3?!?), so tv's not excluded... which makes this list that much dumber... hey there was a robot (Andy?) in a show called "Quark" in the late '70's, why not include him? :twak:

Aaaah well picked toby, I didn't wake up to Knight Rider being TV series, which means Robot from Lost in Space should be well in there.

Ok, T-800. Is that skin or without skin? Either way, plausability should be way up there.

And Ed-209. Comedy 1? Are they kidding. The guy's a riot. Eds are just funny. EdTV. The tv show Ed. Ed Asner. EDdie Murphy. Ed 209. I rest my case.

I have to vote for terminator. (arnie). still the most badass and the most plausible idea for a robot to date. arnie himself made the cyborg more plausible too.

See, how can this list be from more than one person, if he left out GRR as well as all the others we've mentioned?? There's K-9 too. (not my favorite, but beats the he|| out of 'Twiki' or 'Eve of destruction')

Grr
Plausability : 2 Coolness : 10 Dangerousness : 6 Comedy : eleventeen

Any robot list that excludes ROBOT MONSTER is no robot list of mine. They even left out the robots of Turkish Star Wars. What the hell?

Robot Monster goes amuck. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8h2QJ44HnrM)

The frenzied final scene of Turkish Star Wars. (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NbYczbBlatA)

WESTWORLD!!
the Robot Gunslinger, played by Yul Brynner !!

And that android companion from hallowe'en III...

Hell, what about the Beta unit... The Last Star Fighter.

The android from Slipstream... weird and strange, low budget.. and brilliant !

Then you have Japanense robots. Mac cross, gundam, Evangelion ...
At least MechaGodzilla got a mention...

Major' Motoko Kusanagi from Ghost in the Shell. Cyborg kinda... but too much robotics going on NOT to be a 'robot.'

man, so many more.
And yes, Daleks should have been on that list. And the iron Giant, #1 ! With probably Maria (Metropolis) close behind... ;)

SaturnX
08-04-2007, 08:11 AM
Ah, Westworld was mentioned already.

oops.

Er... Iron Giant, the Tin Man, Edward Scissorhands are not even mentioned?!? I would put Astroboy, Goddard (Jimmy's dog), the bots from Zathura (!) or Lost in Space, or Moffit the mecha-Dagget ahead of some of this other gunk.

According to Wikipedia's definition of 'robot' (at bottom), Max Headroom, Pinnochio, Talos and Buzz Lightyear are robots. But we should probably ignore virtual agents and automatons powered by 'magic,' although the robot, Lang's Maria, is mystically animated.

Other memorable robots that popped in my videophile head were the Cronos device (Guillermo del Toro's first film), the Thumb Thumbs from Spy Kids, the psychokiller from Hardware, Ulysees (John Malkovich) from Making Mr Right, sex robot from Heavy Metal, ... cant be too sure what the hell motivated that crazy ball from The Prisoner, the flying killer brain drills from Phantasm, or The Cube. Fleischer's 'Mechanical Monsters' (as in Superman vs...) are at least alluded to as the influence (ripoff) for World of Tomorrow's evil giants. Theres the delightful robo 'bed' in the obscure Roujin Z. Although not autonomous, the giant steampunk spider from Wild Wild West was pretty cool.

Sexiest robots- Cutie Honey (ok, technically she's an android but who cares), Tara (Karen Mistal) from Return of the Killer Tomatoes , vengeful bot from Steel and Lace (particularly the Cindi Brooks incarnation), and before the Fembots there was Dr Goldfoot and the Bikini Machine. And yes, I own all of the above mentioned on video.

Other stupid robots- the pointless killer dog from Red Planet, the characters of Heartbeeps, everything in Maximum Overdrive, the basketball wielding Deadly Friend (Anne Ramsey's death is high-larious), and the robot basketball team in The Harlem Globetrotters on Gilligan's Island.

Minor robots that surfaced while trying to go to sleep and pondering this geek topic was the wacky twin-headed bird in Baron Munchausen, the 'fighter' from Dune, creepy clown faced guardian from Boy and His Dog.

.................................................. ....................

Wikipedia-

A robot is a mechanical or virtual, artificial agent. It is usually an electromechanical system, which, by its appearance or movements, conveys a sense that it has intent or agency of its own. The word robot can refer to both physical and virtual software agents, but the latter are usually referred to as bots to differentiate.[1]

While there is still discussion[2][3][4] about which machines qualify as robots, a typical robot will have several, though not necessarily all of the following properties:

* Is not 'natural' i.e. has been artificially created.
* Can sense its environment.
* Can manipulate things in its environment.
* Has some degree of intelligence, or ability to make choices based on the environment, or automatic control / preprogrammed sequence.
* Is programmable.
* Can move with one or more axes of rotation or translation.
* Can make dexterous coordinated movements.
* Appears to have intent or agency (reification, anthropomorphisation or Pathetic fallacy[5]).

BTW, correct me if I'm wrong but the title of the article is "movie robots" and KIT, Cylons and Twiki were from TV, although they probably appeared as jokes in other movies.

I know we are all trying to forget A.I., but I would have listed the little bear robot in place of Gigolo Joe.
