Hi guys.

I've got a quick issue with Lightwave that is giving me some dramas, and I can't for the life of me figure out why this problem is occuring.

The problem is, that the lighting doesn't appear to be affecting this bent cylinder in a realistic fashion. Here is the image


Take a look on the right hand side of the tube and you might notice the lighting doesnt go all the way to the right hand side... it kind-of starts to form, and then stops at the end.

Im rendering the tube orthographically with two distant lights with no rotation other than a slight angle up or down. Shadows are all disabled and I can't seem to find why this problem is occuring.

The end result of this would hopefully be to make a series of tubes (no pun intended mr. ted stevens...) that would connect flawlessly, however this is not possible with this lighting issue. If I make a straight pipe piece, the lighting flawlessly reaches accross to both ends... so I don't understand how this could be happening.

What can I do to fix this?

Hi Waste
You've either got a smoothing issue or non-planar polygons. Check the stats window for non-planars, and here's some documentation on smoothing (and beveling to control it) that I made. This is the smoothing that you'll find in the surface editor btw

Hmm - the pinch at the bottom could also suggest an unmerged point.

I'd select both ends of the tube - the big polygons - cut and paste them into a different layer in modeler where they'll be safe.

Then go back to the main tube section and merge all points, just in case you have some points sharing the same space.

Then just cut and paste the end polygons back in to the main layer - don't merge the points again, and try another render.

Hi guys

After reading the posts, I decided to remake the shape from scratch (no drama, only takes a second to make...) with no sucess. However after deleting the circular poly's on each end of the pipe itself the problem was solved... both the lighting encapsulation and the glitch with the darkness on the bottom.

I'll let you guys know if any other problems arise... I'm seeing some new little glitches but they may be small enough to ignore now.
