what would be the best way to have a bridge or a spaceship or anything in general get hit by an energy blast and have a piece blown off it? should I set up the places that will get blown off and than use hardbody dynamics?
thanks in advance.

Pretty much. You can have two versions of the object, a cut up one and a non cut up one. At the moment of impact dissolve one in and the other out.

do you think I should use a model of bridge splinters or particles for the wood pieces flying off?

one thing only.. you should to turn on self interact between particles.

And a small suggestion to emit the particles in a direction that conveys the shearing impact of the projectile. Just a small thing, but makes a huge difference. Apart from that, I love where it's going.

this whole thing will be in a scene with two aliens running down the bridge and being shot at from above. another movie coming soon with many improvements.
