Can anyone help me find the link to a certain SSS tutorial... the object in question is shaped vaguely like what I have attached here, with colored glows emanating from its interior on either end.
Looked like a great tute & I failed to save the link.

If this spurs anyones memory, thanks very much in advance.

Have in Mind, that the Scattered Surface is perfectly closed when using Sigma.
You may also want to give the Omega-shader a try.
Having quite good results with it.

Most important when using Sigma:

The SSS-Color has to be the "opposite" of the Color you want it to be.

thanks for the tips... anything else that may strike you as painfully obvious would be a great help too, because I'm not getting anything remotely close to this effect.
Should there be any Global illumination, back lighting, should they be avoided at all cost, etc.? thanks again

Backlighting (place a light right behind the object) is a very nice thing to do, when you try to accomplish a nice SSS-material.

What kind of shader do you use?
Kappa, Sigma or Omega?

Keep in Mind, that SSS is an effect that is dependend on the Lighting Setup you choose and the size of the object.

Feel free to ask. I recently finished a job with Plastic-lids which where done with SSS. So I was facing the same problems some weeks ago. :D
