hi i'm making a wood scene [loads of trees] and wondered if there are any tutorials out there for different types of trees and ways to make them.

so far i've been using hypergrove which is good for the near trees but to thicken up the wood/forest i'll need loads of them...

actually the scene is a toon type style like J neutron/pixar so hypergrove is a little too real ... what the best lo poly way to populate a scene with 50-100 trees?

also i need bushes and grass...or maybe just clumps of grass
i'm thinking that maybe a game style route for creating this stuff would look best...any game tips?

Hey Cresshead check the MistyTrain.lws from the LW- content. The tree there are pretty simple, render rather fast and should work in distance (the scene is in the vehicles- folder).

You could try using Hypervoxels in conjunction with some random points. I did this some time ago and depending on the settings you use the results can be quite realistic, or as stylised as you need.

You could use planes and clip maps with images on them. Have them taget the camera also so you can see the image no matter where the camera is.

Maybe do a few so you have variation, and are not all the same tree.

Hello Cresshead,

We offer a series of tree and foliage tutorials, but you need to own Painter or Paint Shop Pro. Actually, you can download a fully functional 30 day evaluation copy of PSP8 so that's not entirely correct.

The tutorials are about painting quick and easy tree and foliage textures using our tools with these paint programs. We include the stuff you'll need (tubes/nozzles, etc), so you might want to have a look.

The site is commercial, so here's a link to a couple of the tutorial pages themselves. If you want more info, to see some examples or download some smaller textures, you can modify the URL and enter through the front door.

Hmmm...Xfrog does really good looking tree and foliage, but they tend to render very long (every leaf is a poly with transparancy)

i would recommend treecage, which is a script and you can download it for free at http://perso.wanadoo.fr/dpont/plugins/TreeCage_Lscript.htm , it offers a lot of nice options and different ways to create different kind of trees. start with one of the example files, just as a suggestion.
i'm using this for game production in combination with the leave generator from polas. but you can create the leaves easily with point spray and random clone as well if you don't want to spend money for a plugin. (which is indeed worth the money in this case ;-) )
