View Full Version : Real video w/ VFX... What do I need?

I have a friend at school who is going home over 4th of July, and will be shooting a music video for a local band in his home town. He approached me to possibly do some effects for him, since he knew of my interest in Lightwave and After Effects. We're both film students. I do Lightwave as a hobby, but I've mostly done still imagery, or animation that's entirely CG. I've never composited CG into motion video before.

His idea is that the video will be shot on a construction site, and he'd like to have things melting or bursting into flames around the band as they play. For example, rebar protrusions from the concrete, warping in extreme heat. However, like I said, this is his home town, so it isn't possible for me to actually go there and supervise anything, or get an idea for myself of what I might need.

I don't doubt that he could edit together a video without the CG stuff. It's more of an after thought. I'm also pretty sure that if given all the right materials, I can figure out how to put it all together. I'm just not experienced enough to know what to tell him I would need from him in order to pull it off. About all we've discussed so far is having him shoot a mirrored sphere to get a light probe to make realistic lighting really easy, but otherwise I'm not sure what else to tell him.

First of all you need an application to match your LW scene to the real world camera. This process is called match-moving or camera tracking.

Alright, thanks StereoMike, that's a good start. What else might I need to tell him in preparation for any effects we might try to do?

ask him to provide you with the biggest, cleanest footage his cameras can manage. it'll be alot easier to track in your props, then change/degrade the footage to fit the bands' intentions.
