View Full Version : Paths not staying or seen, no output saved - HELP!

Now here's a thing...

I recently upgraded to 9.2, Now every time i start the Layout I get a box saying " WARNING The Output directory does not exsit. Select alternate now?"

The directories I normally use (As with all my LW content) are on NetGear Network drives. Z:/ for content & X:/ for the output file - Rendered frames. All was working fine when using LW 9.0, Including ScreamerNet.

Now (I think) because this directory is not being found or seen, the ScreamerNet saving function does not save anything! Everything renders ok but there's no line saving "Saving RGB..." like before.

Could this be a problem with 9.2 not 'Seeing' the drives correctly??

Hi, even if they are "network friendly" directories, the rendered output seems to need to be within the same exact location as your Lighwave Content.

Perhaps in your case, Z:/YourLightwaveContent/YourRenderedFramesGoHere

I hope this helps. Nothing worse than feeling like the renderfarm has gone barren.

It never used to in 9.0...

Like i said above my Content and output are seperate drives on the network and everything was working before :(

I posted this in the 9.2 Discussion section the other day...

Here's a temporary solution for anyone getting bugged to death by the Warning dialog:

The Output directory specified does not exist. Select alternate now?

1. You need to check (tick) "Use custom paths"

2. Select the save path

3. Quit LightWave

4. Open your LW9.cfg file in a text editor.

5. Find the OutputDirectory entry (line 4) and ADD A BACKSLASH

This works whether you want to use a directory or a seperate drive.

If, for example, your Content Directory is N:\Content, the following would all work.

OutputDirectory N:\Content\Images\

OutputDirectory N:\Content\Renders\

OutputDirectory Renders\

The last one is for using a different drive.

Simon/BloodQuest... You Hero!

I tried it, it worked! Thank you for posting - You've saved me a lot of hair LOL

I'll try the ScreamNet with the new CFG files and post with my findings later.

Dave.

Of course, what I should have been more explicit about is if you're rendering to a different drive, such as a NAS device or RAID is something like this:

OutputDirectory R:\\

Note the additional backslash.

Note that the bug has been squashed in the latest build I've tried (1185), so get rid of the extra slash!

Cheers, Yeah I figured the extra slash when testing :)

And that all works, but... I still cannot get ScreamNet to save to the drive. Even if the node i'm running is on the same machine where the config files are correct! :(

Any more ideas on that?

I guess i need the new LW build !

Sorry - didn't see your last post until now.

I'm rendering with 9.2 and Butterfly Net Render - it still needs the extra slash but works fine.

Alllllll-righty then.... Just got 9.3 and i'm pleased to announce that everything is back to normal... Well for me at least.

I now can keep my content directory as Z:\[PROJECT_NAME] and my screamer rendered frames WILL save to the other drive X:\[FRAMES]
Just like it was back in the 9.0 days

Thanks to everyone that posted and your advice

And for Reference, Here's my setup:

Each Machine is connected to my NAS device via the LAN.

Also each machine has the following setup:

Default Local LW install: C:\program files\.... lightwave 9.3\ Inc all plugins
Default local config files: C:\Documents and Settings\wizzard\*.cfg's

NAS Drive - Z:\ - The Content Drive (Scenes, Models, Surfaces, etc)
NAS Drive - X:\ - Outup folders are on this one
Standard network map drive P:\ - LWSN Ack & Job files

My Machine set-ups

Machine 1 - Control machine (Laptop)
Has local folder 'c:\screamer' mapped to P:\ - for Ack* & Job*
NAS Drive - Z:\
NAS Drive - X:\

Machines 2,3,4,5,6 Render Node machines (Desktops)
Default LW install :c:\program files\.... lightwave 9.3\
NAS Drive - Z:\
NAS Drive - X:\
Standard network map drive P:\

So that each LWSN program is using the same (*.cfg files), a folder on Z:\config has a copy of the *.cfg files on it. And here is one of my BAT Files from Node 1 showing the LWSN commands:

echo init >p:\job1
LWSN.exe -2 -dp:\ -cz:\config\lw3.cfg p:\job1 p:\ack1

..Hope it helps... someone! LOL
