Just an unsolicited review/reminder about Bob Tasa's great plug-ins for SpeedEDIT, they really do add a lot to it.

For anyone doing multiple camera editing, Bob's MCE plug-in is without
question the best way to do it. And Bob has improved MCE so much in
SpeedEDIT compared to the already excellent version in VT[4].

For anyone using the SpeedHQ codec, as John Perkins has pointed out to me,
it is important to have legal signal levels with it. Superblack can cause
quality issues with it. Well, since there's no "force legal" in SpeedEDIT,
that's a VT feature, Bob's Legalize plug-in is VERY useful to maximize your
SpeedHQ quality.

Another little plug-in that people don't probably think of as a big deal,
but it is, is Bob's Chapter Points plug-in. It's the ONLY way currently to
force I-frames for chapter points from markers in SpeedEDIT projects via
MPEG encoding in TMPGEnc. Heck, even if Newtek's MPEG encoder can
eventually force I-frames, Bob's plug-in would STILL be needed to put the
markers to chapter points in the DVD authoring application of your choice.

Many people think of Bob's plug-ins as mainly filters, but there are so many
other ones like I mention above.

Then there's Bob's 3Wheeler plug-in. Now we all know that the color
correction native in SpeedEDIT is much better than in VT, but Bob's 3Wheeler
adds animatable masking, which SpeedEDIT doesn't have natively. This is
very important to regionalize effects when the same color is in multiple
parts of your frame and you don't really want to affect every instance of
it. Bob's Color Replace ties in with all this as well, for some different
secondary color tricks from what the native SpeedEDIT secondary color
correction can do, again, thanks to masking, for one thing.

Then, of course, there's all the many filters that Bob has made. No one has
made more video filters for VT and SpeedEDIT than Bob. I don't use them all
the time, or for my needs as much as some of his plug-ins I've mentioned
earlier, but I'm certainly happy to have them when I do need them. Where
else are you going to find bloom filters, glow filters, strobe, SoftFX, etc.

Then there's the mightly LWC, which in many ways is the most powerful of all
the plug-ins Bob has written. VT users are spoiled by the amount of DVEs we
have bundled with our NLE, be they cheesy DVEs or not. Other NLEs don't
have anywhere near the DVEs that we get automatically. This may make Newtek
users not see how powerful and revolutionary a paradigm shift it is to make
your own custom DVEs on-the-fly in LW for a transition or other effect.

Last but not least, since it's not SpeedEDIT specific, don't forget Oasis.
WIth Apple having the lock on Live Type, Bob's Oasis program is an AWESOME
special effect CG program for the Windows platform, capable of correctly
working with ANY SD or HD resolution you need.

So hey, if you all want to enjoy the abilities Bob has given us into the
future, it's important to support him and buy his products. You don't see
other people writing these things for SpeedEDIT, do you?

And who knows what Bob could come up with next, IF the money is there to do it.

At the risk of jumping out of character I have to agree with what Eugene is saying. I have not tested or worked with all of Bob's plugins but I will tell you that Multicam is great! His Bloom Filter is a must for weddings and LWConnect is a MUST have if you have LW. As for Chapter Markers, if I had to do DVDs on the PC that is a MUST have. And Oasis is a really fast way to make great titles without having to animate everything by hand.

Maybe there should be a link to Bob's website in this thread...

Why make it difficult? Google for Bob will yield a LOT of useless hits.

Google for Bob plugin could EASILY yield NSFW hits.

I have loved Bob since we talked about what my vision was for VT and what it could be. He was pleasingly always willing to work on these ideas 'on rides home on the train'. ;) That part is what always made me chuckle.

Bob's participation in the community absolutely mirrors NewTek's: it's about the regular guy get big bang for his buck. At the same time, know those who you are working for: do the trade shows, go out to eat with and in general get to know (y)our community.

As anyone could easily guess,  , I believe that LWConnect is the most powerful one made to date as it mates the power of the timeline, and the precision, to LW. Crazy power.

From there, MC and Third Channel are the next, for me.

Bob's got the goods for a lot of things Great about VT.

Ivan,
One line in your reply really ... makes a point:

LWConnect is a MUST have if you have LW

I SO AGREE WITH THIS.

hehe, Every Vt has LW with it. And every VT owner has many more possibilities when these dots are crossed and connected.

It would be amiss to *not* mention that right now, Bob is selling a package of his SpeedEDIT-only plug-ins for a sweet $299 -- only, I'm not absolutely sure of the details. My money is funny until 2 weeks from now. Else, he's at the top of my "expendable income recipient" list!

Would someone elaborate further, on Bob Tasa's $299 package of plug-ins for SpeedEDIT?

I would like to request that Newtek buy out Bob, or enter into a licensing agreement with him, so that his excellent plugins come automatically bundled with SpeedEdit at no additional cost. (If need be, there could be an optional separate installer with disclaimer, stating that Newtek does not provide support for the plugins.)

Otherwise, I fear Newtek will refrain from developing similar technology to Bob's plugins, in order to not destroy Bob's target market, and discourage him and other third party developers from creating future plugins.

Actually Neewtek has already stole, copied, borrowed a few of his plug ins and now call them their own. So they have shown they do not care about 'destroying Bob's Target Market'.

Na, leave Bob as his own. We don't want him controlled by the man. :)

Ill throw a pitch in for Bob's support. Immediately a few of his installs have gone wonky on me. Whether it was my faulat I am not sure. But Bob has always been ULTRA quick with response and help.

Hi Jim,
Out of curiosity, which plugins do you think were "stolen?" I love Bob's plugins but I think Newtek is just improving the editor to be competitive with other systems. I've now used Bob's Multicam on 8 1hour dvd's. I've also used strobe, Oasis, LW Connect, and 3 Wheeler. I really wish Newtek would license LW Connect because this would be a killer app other systems couldn't beat, and also increase sales of LW.

If you look at many of the 'additions' added to vt4 and prior, you will see that they have innovated only as far as Bob's plugs go, choosing to ignore so MANY of the things that are in other NLEs.

I really did plead with the powers that be to include LWC. Wait a bit longer and you will see it in SE: it's apparent in the sdk but not implemented yet.

{God, why do I let myself get sucked into these conversations of futility?}

While locking clips and overlays being able to be used with the dve engine aren't sexy, they have (are) being requested, still.

Stolen, no, but they have complimented the heck out of Bob with the sincerest form of flattery.
