My question with this is- When appling image/texture maps the old way in surface editor you can actually see a decent veiw in open GL of how the arrangement is layed over the object. But when I use the same technique using the node editor you no longer see how the texture is being applied until I render it. Is there a switch that I have to turn on to see it?

No, nodes are not previewable in OpenGL.

Nodes are slow to calculate.. and nice one shader requires ray-tracing..

Use FPrime v3.x, that's what can preview them quickly (because it's parallel to LW - OpenGL must be run serial - which would make viewports barely usable)..

You can always use viper.

-Add a extra camera to your scene and zoom in to the surface you wanna edit.
-Open the surface editor
-Enable and open viper
-Select the new camera as your active camera
-Render a frame with f9
-Hit the render tab in viper

voila, now go edit your surface with nodes and you have a realtime preview (except sss).
