I know that the node editor is not that new but I have not really used it until the release of 9.2.
Does it completely supersedes the classic editor when the checkbox is activated (for example smoothing, double sided, etc.) or is it possible or necessary to tweak these settings in conjunction with the node editor?

You can override some surface settings with the node editor and leave others controlled by the classic editor, no problem. If an input isn't connected in the node editor, it uses the classic settings (unless a material or specialised shader is used)

OK, but what about the new physically correct materials? They are connected via the material node. So this must override all classic settings, right?

Yes. If you connect any material node to the Material input in the node editor, it overrides every classic setting except Displacement.

Yes. If you connect any material node to the Material input in the node editor, it overrides every classic setting except Displacement.

...you can use Switch node though to negate that complete override and use some other shader based on Spot info for example.
